WASHINGTON -- The imam behind the plan to build a mosque near Ground Zero surfaced yesterday far from the controversy -- in Bahrain, where he's on a taxpayer-funded trip to the Middle East to spread good will.
Appearing in public for the first time in weeks, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, speaking at a mosque near Bahrain's capital of Manama, said he wants to "Americanize" Islam -- but dodged questions about the uproar over his planned mosque and community center.
Rauf spoke against fanaticism, saying, "This issue of extremism is something that has been a national-security issue -- not only for the United States but also for many countries and nations in the Muslim world."
"This is why this particular trip has a great importance because all countries in the Muslim world -- as well as the Western world -- are facing this . . . major security challenge," Rauf told Associated Press Television News in a brief interview.
The cleric also said he was working on a way to "Americanize Islam," but didn't offer any details.

I was surprised to see that this is not the first time that the Iman has made trips of this kind.

“The State Department confirmed Tuesday that the administration is sponsoring Feisal Abdul Rauf’s trip to Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, which is described as part of a program to send Muslims abroad to educate other countries about the role of religion in the United States. Rauf made similar trips during the Bush administration.”
At least it looks as though he won’t be able to raise any money while he is on this trip. /s

“Rauf starts his tour Thursday in Bahrain and ends it in the United Arab Emirates Sept. 2. At each stop he is expected to discuss Muslim life in America and promote religious tolerance. He will not be allowed to raise funds for the mosque on the trip, Crowley said.
“We have had conversations with the imam to make sure he understands that during these kinds of trips, he’s not to engage in any personal business,” Crowley told reporters. “He understands that completely.”

Gee...where is the ACLU? They would be going nuts if a Christian leader was sent by the Federal Govt to raise money for a church.....I guess Islam and Islamic Terror is OK for the ACLU

It doesn't take a crystal ball or a hit by one of their weapons to know that what's involved here is,

Let me see if I can apply some logic to this situation.
There is a Iman who runs a small unimportant mosque a few miles away with ~$18K in the bank. He is smart and ambitious. He realizes that if he proposes a victory mosque at ground zero; he can raise a $100M + from Muslim nations. He will move from an inconsequential mosque to a pilgrimage spot. He will go down in history as the Iman who conquered America. This mosque will be in the news demanding more and more from government. As soon as it is built the Iman will want the call to prayers to be blasted from the minarets three times a day. He create sharia courts, where his congregation will seek justice. This mosque will be a thorn in the side of NY until it is conquered.

And this is enforceable how? Yeesh. Can’t believe that either administration is dropping a dime on this project.
The USAID mosque rebuilding gets on my nerves, too.
