Double-dips are good for ballroom dancers and useful to economists.
The first is obvious. If you can execute an elegant dip or two during a tango it goes a long way toward obscuring flaws in the rest of your routine.
The same is true for double-dip recessions, which you will be hearing a lot more about over the next week.
It's hard to find an expert who correctly predicted the economy would be sinking again this summer. OK, this column did.
But my sources and I understood that much of the economic gains this past spring were an illusion caused by faulty seasonal adjustments.
So it was pretty easy to anticipate that business conditions would look worse once these adjustments corrected themselves.
Next Friday we'll get a correction that'll put the words "double-dip" back into the headlines.
That's when the Commerce Department will announce that the nation's gross domestic product didn't grow at the previously believed 2.4 percent annual rate during this year's second quarter.

What kind of business should one start that would survive and turn a profit? And what’s the least one would have to invest?
I hear that. The Republicans are going to have to have someone that can explain what people should have learned in Civics 101 since the public at large doesn't seem to understand how anything is designed to work. If the collapse doesn't accelerate before November, the media and democrat thugs will just run around yelling "Hoover" and "evil tax cuts" and covering up who is responsible just like they covered up the decades it took to cause the housing crisis, a crisis Bush warned us was coming multiple times but was soundly ignored.
Forget the fact that they can't possibly pay for what they've legislated, they're going to be screaming about how it's the fault of the Republicans that everyone isn't getting a free house, free car, and free health care to go with their $102k a year federally provided job, and some people will believe it!!
If that sort of crap that's worked before isn't enough, are the millions who say they're republican or independent but bought democrat propaganda and conspiracy theories for six of eight years immune to democrat propaganda yet? Are the majority of them even admitting they were suckered which is the first step to getting better?
Yeah, I worry too. This is either the last chance we're going to get to turn things around in which case we'd better do a damn good job of it, or we're going to finally get what our own ability to ignore reality has brought on and we'd better do a damn good job of learning how to live in the early 1900s and be the world's low cost labor (fat chance). Alternatives other than those two are so grim they're not worth getting into in a political discussion since they're all tribal and local.
Regards
I dunno. Maybe a little blackmarketeering is going to be in order. Useually a lively black market emerges during socialist destruction of an economy.
The only thing the republicans are going to be able to do, if they have the balls to do it, is shut everything down. They won’t have enough votes to over ride a veto. And there’s no way the media will cut them any slack.
