The 500K number is simply the number who have applied last week for unemployment benefits.
That is an annualized number of 26,000,000 (26 MILLION!)
I can’t wrap my head around that number (I can, mathematically), but 500K NEW? 26Mil total now? I can’t imagine the suffering going on nation wide right now; and for what?
