Republican Paul Smith said today that he is suspending his campaign against Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui, effective immediately.
"Today, I am sad to announce that we will have to suspend campaign operations due to lack of financial support," Smith said in a letter to supporters. "All campaigns must have some support from the voters and it has become apparent just relying on my bank account to pay for everything is no longer feasible."
Smith said that if he cannot raise $20,000 by the end of the month, he will end all campaign operations and return to his job selling houses.
"As of today, all precinct walks, meetings and events are canceled," he said.

Michael Steele and the RNC have absolutely nothing to do with this. /s
Paul Smith is not Republican....well, he's nowhere even near a conservative.
He's FAR, FAR to the left of Whitman.
It's best to wait until 2012 for this one, when Mariner is running.
Has there been a primary for this?
For realzies? You intend to run for the 5th Congressional District in 2012?
If so, Good On Ya, Mariner!
Although I'm not in the 5th Dist, I do believe that a sincere conservative might make a proper race of it, even in the Peoples' Republic of Sacramento (recall Brown's recent surprise victory over the uber creepy Coakley in Mass.)
.
Is this a RAT goner district anyway? I’d hate to lose a possible pickup.
Just what is the RNC doing lately..hard to tell
Well, that's my intent anyway.
It's not like a conservative could actually WIN here...everyone of my neighbors is a Federal, State, County, City or some other type of Special District employee.
Man, you talk about being in the belly of the beast. My neighborhood is literally Ground Zero (no disrespect intended).
However, IF I stand for office here, it will be on Principle.
We’re facing what seems to be one of the most vital elections in our time, and those idiots are preoccupied with propping up Steele!!!
I give him credit for guts.
And, government workers (many of them anyhoo) eventually get the idea that only so much tax money can be extracted from the allegedly "rich" turnips.
The key for GOPers to win anywhere is to stand on Reagan principles. John Sidney McCain tried to be liberal light, and did not defend George Dubya - - which was his second biggest mistake (his first being the failure to unmask Imam Obama's true socialist alliances and goals.)
You would need to start early next year, but I'm guessing you are quite up to the task.
.
Those are the principles upon which I will stand.
There's no need to reinvent the wheel.
This is about as reliable a Dem district as there is. Doris Matsui’s husband won it in 1978 against a credible GOP candidate, Sandy Smoley. When he died, his wife inherited it and she is solid in the district. When she dies, her son or daughter will probably inherit it, and so on.
Barring the neighbors who might actually care about serving the people, I’d probably call it the taxpayers’ money pit instead.
Suicide district, waste of money. Smith received 21% in 2008.
