NY1 Exclusive: Developer Won't Budge on Mosque Location (Says It's "Nowhere Near" Ground Zero)

SNIP

Sharif El-Gamal is the developer behind the plan to erect an Islamic community center and mosque two blocks from the World Trade Center site.

Calls are mounting for him and the other backers to find a new home for their center, further away from the site of the September 11th terrorist attacks, but El-Gamal isn't budging.

He is sticking with his plans to erect a 13-story center and prayer space in Lower Manhattan. He likens the project to a YMCA or Jewish Community Center, with programs open to all residents of all faiths.

"A landmark, an iconic building that will have people come and visit it from around the world,” said El-Gamal as to what he imagines. “This looks like it is going to be the most famous community center in the world."

SNIP

"Park51 is a community center. It is two blocks north of the World Trade Center site,” said El-Gamal. “In New York City, two blocks is a great distance. There are some buildings in New York that have their own zip codes. There is such a scarcity of space in New York, especially in Lower Manhattan. Keep in mind this is a small island, so we are nowhere near the World Trade Center site."

SNIP

Of course, the project got a boost from the White House last weekend when President Barack Obama spoke strongly in support of the developer's right to build the center. El-Gamal says he heard the president's remarks while he was on his way to East Hampton. He says he was blown away.

When a church, synagogue, buddhist temple are built in Mecca, I may change my mind...

The libtards who run our regional govt won’t allow a freaking Walmart because it offends their sensibilities. It’s perfectly OK to ban Walmart (and lots of other law abiding companies) in this country, but God forbid we say anything negative about the freaking pisslamic victory mosque.

Good luck finding Union workers that will do the construction. I will bet it will be burnt down at least 2x before the insurance Co. pulls out! And a half dozen will die crossing picket lines.

“Of course there’s a way to stop this thing. That’s what zoning laws are for.”

What zoning law do you propose?

“Glenn Beck identified something like 50k sq. ft. of available space in Manhattan.”

50K sq.ft. is just slightly more than 1 acre.

Prediction: The Imam will agree to move the mosque and Obama aided by his MSM stenographers will claim the credit. His WH Iftar statement will be hailed as a master stroke that cut the Gordian knot.

Behind the scenes the Adminstration was begging the Imam to change his mind and help Obama who is under attack and needs his support. In return, Obama will repay the Imam tenfold in many ways.

My bad. It was a little more than that:

GB transcript: “Gov. Paterson now said on Tuesday the developers of the mosque near Ground Zero might consider moving the project and even floated the idea of offering them state land farther from Ground Zero. Why, they just did that for my church the other day. Oh, no wait. No, they didn’t.

Apparently, though, the developers of the Park 51 mosque project just can’t find any other place in Manhattan or New York, because everything is totally full. Totally occupied. Yes.

I had my staff look for about 10 minutes today. And we only found — oh, I don’t know — 57.7 million square feet of available space on the island. That’s it.”

How many acres is 57.7 million aquare feet?

I agree with you. One day mosques will form a chain across the entire country—as common as McDonald’s or Starbucks. But it will be too late, and it will be impossible to unseat any of them OR to escape that awful, mournful, “call to prayer” five times a day. I know whereof I speak, since I lived in a Muslim country. Your day begins, ends, and is dominated by this intrusive mournful wail. This argument about the Ground Zero mosque will be remembered fondly as “the good old days,” when something could’ve been done.

“El-Gamal says he heard the president’s remarks while he was on his way to East Hampton. He says he was blown away.”

Exceedingly tasteless choice of words from a tasteless little man who wants to befoul the final resting place for many of the victims that were never recovered.

There is a large mosque in the north part of Phoenix. Beautiful building, just north of the 101... Every time we have been by, the parking lot has been virtually empty. Every time.

Slightly off topic, but related: I lived in a moderate Muslim country for a couple of years (in a rural area). I visited two women, both of whom were married to the same man. Through a translator, I asked them about this arrangement. Giggling, they replied that NEITHER of them liked the man and that they (the two women) were actually friends. I suspect that many of these marriages to multiple wives are fraught with all kinds of intrigues and problems. I wonder how many abusive Muslim husbands have “accidents”?
