Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the Democratic congressman who represents ground zero in New York, vigorously defended a group’s right to build a mosque near what was once the World Trade Center.
“There’s no way for government to block this,” the liberal congressman said on CNN’s “State of the Union," reiterating a point he made in a statement on Saturday.
Asked about polling that shows bipartisan opposition to the project, Nadler said public opinion shouldn’t matter and stressed his fundamental belief that government has no right or business to comment one way or another on an issue of this sort.
“We do not put the Bill of Rights, we do not put religious freedom, to a vote,” he said. “I hope that people will understand that government has no role in this.”
He declined to say whether he believes the mosque sponsors should work with local officials to find a new location.
And he said that he did not see the location choice as insensitive.
“It is only insensitive if you regard Islam as the culprit, as opposed to Al Qaeda as the culprit" of the Sept. 11 attacks, he said.“Islam did not attack us.”

Also stupid is the comment Islam had nothing to do with the attack. Of course it was the entire motivation for the attack and continues to be. What else do they have to do to declare war on the west?
“Congress shall make no law ...” has nothing to do with local zoning.
Really? The government doesn’t control zoning laws and permits in NY City?

That aside, there is a way to block it. Freedom of religion has NOTHING to do with construction of a building. The only things covered are the NECESSITIES involved, which is almost nothing for any religion in the world. Everything else is just extra.
They can go lay prayer mats out all damn day for all I care, but that building is NOT covered in our Constitution or any other document of this nation.
Some on the Left may have been momentarily taken back on 9/11 but they saw Bush on the ruins of the Towers and realized that America was to blame for the anger of the Muslims and, besides, Capitalists and Jews were the main targets.
It may be built but it will never remain standing.
