One day after President Obama defended the freedom of Muslims to build an Islamic complex near New York's Ground Zero, he offered a less forceful version of that position on Saturday: Yes, Muslims have that right, Obama said -- but that doesn't mean he believes it is the right thing for them to do...
But he went on to explain that he was not endorsing the construction of the Islamic center. "I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there," he said. "I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding."
Obama's speech Friday brought down an avalanche of criticism from the right -- as the White House surely expected it would...
But Obama's remarks also unsettled many of his fellow Democrats, who would have preferred that he not embroil himself...
"It's going to play poorly for many Democrats and will be used as a political club by those Republicans willing to exploit it," said one senior Democratic aide on Capitol Hill...
Their concern is not that Obama's comments will feed the myths about his citizenship, his religion and his allegiances that have taken root in the far reaches of the right; those voters are cemented in place against the Democrats already....
However, to his critics it suggests a disregard for the wishes of the public. "It feels very Bush-esque," said Matthew Dowd, who was a top political adviser to former President George W. Bush until they parted ways over the Iraq war. Dowd said Republicans will exploit the controversy to ask, "Does this guy listen, or does he think he's too smart for all of us?"

He was for the mosque before he was against it.
Funny how 1st Amendment freedom of religion is now such a highly cherished right.
Zer0 is just being a typical Imam, saying one thing in Arabic to the believers and running the Islamic Okie-Dokie Bamboozle Hoodwink on the infidels in English.
This is going viral!
Obama now tries to change what he says, Because his staff
at the WH reported back to him the anger and outrage from
the US citizens all over the continent.
But, this will only make it worse, as people have already
seen now who he Really is.
He is a closet muslim, and is Coming Out now! but then
didn’t have the courage to do it completely once people
found out. hahaaaaa.
Goodbye Obama, you are the weakest link. haha.
Well, pretty much every Muslim on Earth now thinks it is. They'll use it to rationalize building it.
Agreed and the chronology of it all is very revealing, i.e. the story could not have been written, edited and published (especially in print editions) without split-second timing and coordination between the White House, the Post and various staffers/writers. In other words, they may have already had the lifeboats inflated in case the ship took on water which it obviously did.
This isn't a case of reporters collecting facts and conducting interviews...it's simply an auxiliary White House press office.
This smacks of:”It depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.”
The only Americans dumb enough to fall for the word parsing are those who have already swallowed the Kool-Aid and would forgive Obama no matter what he says or does. And, for those of us on the right, this is merely confirmation of that which we already knew about him. However, to the great unwashed middle—those independents whose loyalties flit with each new sound bite—this might actually make a difference.
Hippity hoppity, flippity floppity.
I’ll say ONE thing for Obama. He has EXTREME GALL!
Obama: “”I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding.”
Isn’t that the Constitution that he’s trying to dismantle piece by piece?
Ask the muslims if they think it’s an endorsement, I guarantee they think it is. Afterall, barack is a muslim, isn’t he?
Someday, doctoral papers will be written, and philosphers will theorize on the madness that caused America, seven years after 9/11, to elect a president directly connected to a Muslim lineage. It will be a historical bewilderment for centuries.
You just nailed it on the x-ring.
The fact that he’s now trying to split hairs in this lawyering fashion means he’s lost control of the issue. He can now try to explain his remarks at length, and only the twerps in the press will listen. The public has heard as much as they need to.
This is one of those issues that is so loaded, so emotionally charged, the public isn’t going to debate it. One wrong word and a pol is toast.
This is another one of these gaffes of Obama where he just could not resist opening his mouth, much like the Gates incident. There was no reason at all why he needed to comment on either issue, but he felt an urge to say something about a local issue, where he forgets that the whole of the US isn’t as lunatic left wing as Cambridge or Manhatten. Bloomberg might get away with supporting this mosque... A national pol will not.
Tumulty of Journolist fame....
Obama would rather see Muslims build a mosque at Ground Zero than see Jews build housing in their capitol city.
Thank you sir, may I have another.
Has Karen fitted herself with a burqa yet?
After Carter, Mondale and Dukasis, the Bolshecrats changed the rules so they would never have failure as an option, but, true to their convictions they made things worse. The Bolshecratic party needs to be destroyed and added to the ash heap with their brothers, Nazis, Fascists and Communists.
Than why ddidn’t he keep his lying, Kenyan, Marxist mouth shut.
Karen is one of those Washington Post-style women whose appearance would actually be improve by the burqa.
This needs to be on billboards and buses throughout NY.
Don't leave out the 'myth' about his sexual orientation.
“I love the spin coming out.
I was only commenting on the freedom of religion aspect, and our adherence to the Constitution and our founding fathers (Or something)”
I believe he’s refering to his OWN “founding fathers,” not ours. Anyone care to start the list?
. . . . pissing down America’s back again and it ain’t raining . I am a very proud infidel and you’re political career is just about over .
