Alexander Hamilton was THE American conservative.

What?!

If you think "conservatism" = empire without the king.

That's what Hamilton was all about. "What's good for General Bullmoose/Is good for the U.S.A.!" could have been his slogan (hat tip to cartoonist Al Capp).

Thomas Jefferson and his party supported the French Revolution. Hamilton was horrified by it.

I'd hate to know your opinion of George Washington.

I'd hate to know your opinion of George Washington.

When I visited Mount Vernon, the guide pointed out a key hanging on the wall. It was originally a key to the Bastille, and was a gift to Washington from the French Revolutionary (and former adviser to Gen'l Washington) Marquis de Lafayette.

The French Revolution was a demonic horror, but that fact was not immediately obvious.
