After a barrage of criticism, president appears to backtrack, saying: 'I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there'.
Barack Obama has come under attack from American conservatives for supporting plans to build a mosque two blocks from the site of one of the terror attacks of 11 September 2001. The proposal for a mosque and community centre near the site of the World Trade Centre has attracted a large opposition movement in a fierce argument over religious freedom.
At a White House dinner marking Ramadan, Obama said: "As a citizen, and as president, I believe Muslims have the same right to practise their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community centre on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
But New York Republican congressman Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, condemned the proposed mosque and the president's comments. He said the mosque would be a symbol of Muslim "triumphalism" and that building it near the site of the 9/11 attacks "would be like putting a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust museum".
Obama appeared last night to retreat from his remarks. "I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there," he told reporters while visiting the Gulf Coast. "I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. That's what our country is about."

he should be under fire for supporting this travesty....it must not be built.
He picks the lunatic side to supoort and is too spineless to stick by it.
Loon, spinless, and weasel are the words to use.
The news reports keep saying criticism from “conservatives”.
Conservatives my eyeball. Most liberals, moderates, Dems and pubs think this is a bad idea. In fact,I’m betting that Obama’s staff et all are getting angry earfulls from Dems in the House and Senate and across the fruited plains.
Cause most Americans are against this thing and if weren’t bad enough before, now the Dems got to run with their President’s endorsement of a mosque withing spitting distance of ground zero on their backs.
And don’t forget a few month’s ago that Obamer told Isreal it was insensitive in building an apartment complex in an area of Jerusalem that Palestine dreams of having as their capital...which will never happen but still....
This is going to hurt Obamer big time. And he ain’t walking away from this and he can’t blame Bush.
Apparently the Guardian doesn't employ fact checkers on the weekends.
Dubya had those very same dinners.
I agree. This issue will cost him.
TOO. LATE. EPIC. FAIL.
King Hussein shows, again, that when choices need to be made, he will always side with Muslims.
FUBO anyway!
: )
And when Dubya backed down after being forced to by muzzies, I knew we were in trouble.
When did he back down, you ask?
Remember when he initially named our military response "Infinite Justice"?
And the muzzies had a fit, claiming the use of the word "Infinite" was a religious slur to them?
Because I remember it. It was the first time I realized for certain that Bush wasn't all I had imagined him to be.
There were many more disappointments to follow.
He was for the mosque before he was against the mosque.
It ain't your country you Marxist, Moo-slim, steaming Kenyan pant load. And you have no idea what OUR country is about. F you!
Bush also observed the national day of prayer for all Americans, loved this country to it’s very soul, praised and supported our troops and did what was best for them on two war fronts...and NEVER lied and spouted BS about Islam being a part of America’s greatness when they NEVER were...and BUSH never spent a million dollars sending some terrorist all over the middle east to gather money to build a mosque he wants to shove down our throats!
What’s more he never blamed Clinton for all the burst bubbles, and recessions NOR the $5.7 TRILLION dollar deft he left for Bush to work with...
It’s the Guardian
Yes.
This might be his real Waterloo.
Dubya was only continuing with the tradition started by the Clintons.
