"A former senior Bush aide, chief speechwriter Michael Gerson,..."

A symptom of the problems with the Bush Presidency.

I am 67 and don’t recall that. How many decades back are you talking about?

Hmm, my first Gov 101 course was way back in 1962 and we used V.O.Key (Party and Politics) to cover the Souf', and a different text for the Nawth ~ and there was an incredible section (in both books) about the Republican use of Democrats in otherwise heavily Democrat districts to win elections ~ in the Souf' and in areas that'd moved to FDR in the 1930s.

So, I'd say with V.O.Key putting such materials in his book originally published about 1959, we are talking back to the 1920s!

I took a lot of what is known as "political theory" ~ and backed that up with course in statistics ~ even had Harris' daughter (a literal walking goddess type woman) in one of my classes. Guy's pole vaulted into and out of the classroom I kid you not.

The things we remember eh!

Worth repeating:

"gerson was bush’s big amnesty guy. gerson fomented the “just trying to make a better life.” argument. big on compassionate conservatism. he’s one of the guys that helped make bush unpopular with his own base."
