President Obama strongly backed the mosque planned near Ground Zero as he celebrated Ramadan with Muslim Americans at the White House saying it shows that Americas commitment to to religious tolerance is "unshakeable."
"Let me be clear: as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," Obama said in his first comments on the controversy.
"This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure," Obama told those in attendance at the White House Iftar dinner.
The president acknowledged the controversy that has been raging since plans for the mosque and community center were announced.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED! A Ramadan-observing pseudo-prez supports a mosque at Ground Zero! /s
Muslim at the White House.

Tolerance does not mean strong support, Obama you idiot.
So what did he do after he gave this speech and popped the emergency chute on the White House? Grab a beer and run out into the Rose Garden?
I’m having a “dog bites man” moment with this news flash.
“The writ of our Founders must endure.”
Who would have guessed that the Marxist-in-Chief has such reverence for the Constitution?
There are dozens of mosques in NYC, so not building one at Ground Zero would not be restricting freedom of religion. Many municipalities refuse to allow churches in neighborhoods. Does this mean that mosques must be allowed wherever Muslims want them by Presidential decree?
The audacity of this guy's bullshit is stunning.
What does the fact that Muslims have always been welcome in this country have to do with the blatant insult involved in this mosque? Nothing, and he damn well knows it. Muslims have NOTHING to complain about regarding their treatment in this country, whether by the government or its citizens. We responded how, after 9/11? Our president made the point that this was a "religion of peace" and that we were at war with terror, not Islam (whatever I thought of those positions). Our citizens, in their justifiable anger after seeing 3000 innocents slaughtered in the name of Islam, responded by marching in the streets, killing believers, daily denouncing the religion of the attackers--oh, wait, that's not what happened at all.
So please, Mr. President, take this lying garbage about "religious freedom" and stick it. It is about a religion that despises this nation, has attacked this nation, and stands for everything this nation and your supporters despise--the subjugation of women, the killing of homosexuals, religious control of the state and the schools, and the quashing of all dissent and minority opinion.
This is no more about freedom of religion than it is about real estate. And he knows it.
His tone of voice was despicable.
No one has said muslims don’t have the right to practice their religion.
No surprise that he supports the mosque at Ground Zero. He is part of the worldwide islamic movement to destroy Christianity and Judaism.
Honorable Americans will wake up to the danger or we will be doomed to live under $haria law. Stonings, beheadings, women locked away from education, medical care, and daylight.
Hopefully Obama can be moved there in 2012 so he can spend some time there before the Republicans have the federal government seize it.
he’s using the statement that muslims should be allowed to build a mosque and observe their religion... because this is America
this is true
of course, if the muslims were actually interested in their religion, and not just poking America in the eye, then they would OBVIOUSLY see the sensitivity of placing a mosque in that area... and would beg forgiveness, say their sorry for choosing that location, and find a new site.
but that’s not what they are doing. no. they are deliberately trying to rub our noses in the 9-11 event... and either 0bama is so stupid that he doesn’t see that... or complicit and actually wants to help
Now I know that I am right in opposing it.
“Stonings, beheadings, women locked away from education, medical care, and daylight.”
Are you talking about “women” like Rosie O’Donnel, Joy Behind, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary, ...?
If so I might be persuaded ...
... just a little.
We have freedom of speech, but as a white male why don’t I have the right to use the “n-word” here. When you answer that question you will understand why the victory mosque at the site of 9/11 should not and cannot be allowed.
Religious freedom like Freedom of speech should not be absolute either nor is it.
Just because you have the right does not make it right.
The building of the mosque at the site of 9/11 is an arrogant display of ethnic and religious chauvinism meant to be a provocation.
great post
How is the average New Yorker reacting to this?
Very, very good call. I wish I had written your post. It is so pure in its logical reasoning in a very complicated matter. Cheers for your insight!
I used it here earlier today. I don't let other folks limit my rights. :)
Of course the mosque is a provocation. Our nation is locked in the liberal mindset of looking at an issue, worrying what "The Right People" (usually imaginary) will think of our response (Will they think I'm a bigot, even though I'm not? Well, I can't let anyone have that erroneous belief of me, so...), and then responding not as we truly believe but in accordance to this liberal morality.
Liberalism is one thing, but buying into the mindset that we can't let anyone even falsely believe we're Bad is almost worse.
