NASHVILLE, TN (Catholic Online) - When asked why they do it, homeschool families consistently answer that they do it because it is the absolutely best way to educate children. Far from being elitist however, or the statement of simple, ignorant, or deluded homeschool parents, it seems that two decades of research affirms this answer with empirical evidence, according to a recent study.
In February of this year, Brian Ray published a study of the largest nationwide sample of home educators and their children in the United States. Also a review of existing research on homeschooling, it asserts an incredible fact that most do not know, and often do not believe:
"[H]omeschool students and their families are in some ways a select population: although the income for homeschool families with school-age children in this present study is at about the national median, '. education levels are well above national averages'. This is consistent with the body of extant research. It is not a surprise" (Academic Achievement and Demographic Traits of Homeschool Students: A Nationwide Study).
What the evidence consistently suggests is that there is much more involved in an "education" than a teacher's certificate, curriculum packages, sports or electives. After all, the family structure in most home schools is traditional and overwhelmingly Christian, headed and taught by married parents. The father is the primary wage earner while the mother stays at home, and they have three or more children.

But more importantly to me, they know their Lord and His Word, and they know the Founders and the Founding documents. That alone is worth the price of homeschool.
Home-school been-there-done-that and have the 26-year-old Doctor of organic chemistry making double my salary as a research scientist to prove it.

Right behind you, my oldest is 20 and finishing up his first summer internship. He was a National Merit Scholar Finalist, near-perfect SAT scores (perfect on Math section). My 16 yr old starts the SAT process soon so we’ll see how that goes.
I don't disagree with much of anything in the article, but I gotta say it just cries out for a rewrite.
And there is no wonder why he needs after schooling. With math like what is shown in the video being taught in his school, he not only can't understand it, I have a hard time myself helping him through 2nd grade homework. His Washington State school uses the “Everyday Mathematics” shown in the video

Obama will figure out a way to discourage homeschooling by taxing it (or outlaw it altogether).
My son was getting C’s & B’s when my wife and I pulled him out of public school four years ago. He graduated high school this year and won a “full ride” scholarship to Michigan State. The average teacher comes from the lower quarter of their graduating class so it is no wonder home schoolers get a better education.
It’s not just teaching them some things, but a lifestyle of learning. That’s the difference.
There was a huge difference in how they did in school and their three older siblings who, unfortunately did not receive the same attention. Youngest son begins his full ride scholarship at trade school next week and daughter is going into her senior year with a 4.0.
They already are effectively taxing us in homeschooling, by assessing property taxes that go to the government (public) schools even though we don’t use them! I wish, at a time of lesser fiscal stress, this could be brought to a general vote, because I think even many non-homeschoolers would appreciate the unfairness of such a system.

Everyday Mathematics is a travesty.
If you want a good math curriculum, try Saxon Math.
Go for older, used versions if you can find them and be sure to get the test booklet and answer key.
Saxon Math has grades one -three but they are not worth the extra money, IMO. I found that there were math workbooks that we found at Sams club of all places, that taught what the kids needed to know for those years and were FAR cheaper.
We stated Saxon Math 54 in third grade. You can do that and proceed at his own pace. It does a phenomenal job with place value and skip counting, which lays a great foundation for multiplication.
Don’t forget to look at board games like Yahtzee and Monopoly and Scrabble (two birds with one stone there) and make him keep score.
**ALL** government schools in this nation are socialist-funded and godless. Most are owned and run by the government.
So?...What happens when a child attends a socialist, godless, and government owned and run school?
Answer: He learns to be comfortable with socialism, godlessness, and having the government own and run his **life** and ultimately his **SOUL**!!!!
