Actually I think many (OK some) would. Every summer I do construction mission work in poor/rough neighborhoods. That means of course the residents are identifiably ‘black.’ Many of the folks there ARE losers. But many are just hopeless. Their neighborhood sucks. Their schools suck. Their lives suck. AND there are FEW jobs of real meaning within 30 minutes. It’s really no wonder they respond to a message like Obama’s.
I’ve worked with ‘families’ that are fourth and fifth generation no-job-I-live-in-the projects. They CANNOT see a bright future. They simply DO NOT have the values we wish they would have to be productive in a high-tech society. AND they have people there telling them it’s your and my fault. We try to do our part to spread the Gospel, spread some love, and add a touch of real hope.
... and this summer we wouldn’t let the kids sleep in the top bunks by the windows in case random rounds came through the windows of the school we were quartered in. (none did, although someone DID empty a small caliber revolver real close by).
I’m pretty sure there’s a passage in the Bible that says something about casting pearls before swine.
I tried helping a poor family once, going to their home and repairing furniture.
While there one of the girls came and asked me if I had some plastic sheets to cover a window because they had just torn out the screen.
I finished up, left, and have had no interest in helping such self-destructive people again.
Thank you for what you do. It is much needed.
