White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, drawing criticism for his remarks on the professional left, sent his deputy to fill in for him an hour before he was scheduled to brief reporters on Tuesday.
The White House announced that the deputy press secretary, Bill Burton, would take reporters questions at 1:30 p.m., 30 minutes later than Gibbs was scheduled to brief.
Gibbs had singled out liberal naysayers in an interview with The Hills Sam Youngman. I hear these people saying hes like George Bush. Those people ought to be drug tested, Gibbs told him. I mean, its crazy.
Hours after the story was published, Gibbs apologized in this statement to the left-leaning Huffington Post, The Washington Posts Greg Sargent and The Atlantics Marc Ambinder:
I watch too much cable, I admit. Day after day it gets frustrating. Yesterday I watched as someone called legislation to prevent teacher layoffs a bailout -- but I know that's not a view held by many, nor were the views I was frustrated about.
