Idaho State Police are investigating what is being described as an accidental shooting involving the 9mm handgun of an off-duty Emmett police officer that injured a woman and two boys, ages 2 and 3.
ISP Captain Steve Richardson says the gun discharged one bullet Friday morning in a Gem County residence, injuring the three people.
Police are declining to release more information, including the relationship of the people involved and who had the gun when it discharged.
Police say the three who were injured were taken by private vehicle to Walter Knox Memorial Hospital in Emmett, where the woman and 3-year-old were treated and released.
The 2-year-old was taken by private vehicle to Saint Alphonsus Hospital in Boise for more treatment.
Police say his injuries are not life threatening.
Names have not been released.
Negligent discharge, not accidental.
You didn’t get the meme?
When its a civilian its a negligent discharge, but when its the cops its always accidental.
Even when its the NYPD shooting up a city block, firing 46 rounds, hitting 3 innocent bystanders, the victim of the crime they were responding to and two of their own cops...
Memo...
Did he already have a round chambered, and walking around with “one in the pipe”?
Because that’s just plain careless, if he did.
Let me guess... off duty and drinking. Just another one of those unfortunate accidents unless you are NOT a policeman.
Bet it was a Glock, I own one and like it. However it does not tolerate dumbass mistakes very well.
By “walking around” with one chambered, I’m assuming you meant with it out of the holster. There’s nothing careless about carrying a weapon with a chambered round in a holster - it’s not going to go off on its own.
Really? All by its little self? I have got to get me one of those self-discharging police-type guns.
Even cops have their “hold muh beer” moments. Whod’ve thunk it!
We should look on the bright side of stories like this one:
At least no dog was killed in the shooting.
Any clue as to why there's so little detail?
As for my “one in the pipe” comment, my Glock has no safety, so if a round is chambered and the weapon is dropped, there is an ever so slight chance that something might cause it to discharge.
An “off-duty officer” really doesn’t need a round chambered, IMHO.
Just my personal preference.
Apart from keeping one’s finger off the trigger at all times - the movie “The Other Guys” was horrible about that - it’s also important for people to go against their instinct and let the gun go ahead and fall if dropped.
We sometimes have so much money invested in them, we’re sentimentally attached, or we hold it in such reverence that we want to catch it. It becomes a game of chance whether you’re going to hit the trigger and where it will be pointed if you do.
I’m not saying that’s what happened in this case, but it’s good advice. Someone I know dropped his, and when he caught it he accidentally pulled the trigger with it aimed at his head. It was his carry weapon, and he had just unloaded and cleared it - the only reason he’s alive.
Yep - let it fall. Practice your self-restraint with a sharp knife if you need to.
Your Glock has internal safeties to prevent the pin from striking the primer if it is dropped. The drop tests performed on Glocks have been nothing short of over-the-top, and they don’t fire when dropped. The firing pin is captured unless the trigger is moved to the rear.
Now, there are several documented instances of people dropping a Glock and trying to catch it, resulting in discharge. There are plenty more instances of cops going to holster their Glock with their finger in the trigger guard and causing a discharge.
They don’t tolerate stupid operators well.
That’s alot of magic.Magic bullet and gun.
I couldn't have said it better.
Notice the officer was not arrested nor even disciplined for shooting 3 people.
If an average citizen did that they would be facing charges.
