Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell on Monday said that Republican desires to repeal the 14th Amendment are “cuckoo” and prove that many in the GOP “are nuts.”
Asked during an MSNBC interview about many Republicans’ calls to repeal the portion of the 14th Amendment providing citizenship to any person born in the United States, Rendell said the idea will likely turn off many independent voters.
“They're going to fire up their base, but I think it's a damaging strategy for independents,” he said. “If I'm an independent and I look at [GOP Gov.] Rick Perry saying Texas is going to secede from the union, and now I hear the Republican Party saying repeal the 14th Amendment — which has done so much good for the country — I'm beginning to worry that these guys are cuckoo.”
“Not all Republicans – there are plenty of good ones – but there are a lot of people who are nuts in there,” he said.
Both Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Minority Leader John Boehner support holding hearings to review the amendment, and the idea has the support of numerous Senate Republicans looking for a way to cut down on the number of illegal immigrants who are able to live in the United States because their children – dubbed “anchor babies” by Republicans – were born in the country.

We have precious little time to take back our country and repealing the 14th Ammendment is right down there on the list with root canals and buying your cemetery plot.

‘Nuts’ is letting people who despise what your country stands for to exploit your generous laws to destabilize your nation. ‘Nuts’ is rewarding those who don’t work hard, and punishing those who do. ‘Nuts is believing that giving free health care to millions of people, while asking the rest of society to pay for it, and crushing the incentive of those who provide it will is fair and will end up well. ‘Nuts’ is believing that gang violence, teen pregnancies, poverty, ridiculously low high school graduation rates and high welfare rates in the inner city are the fault of rich white people. ‘Nuts’ is believing that profane, cynical, and often violent ‘entertainment’ coming our of Hollywood is ‘art’ and doesn’t have negative effects on society. ‘Nuts’ is believing that it was ‘our fault’ that radicals flew airplanes into buildings and killed over 3000 people, including infants. The 14th amendment is being abused. That amendment was only meant to repatriate ex-slaves after the civil war.

It was not written to allow anchor babies. Justice Brenner changed that. It does not need to be changed to fix it either.
