My grandmother came from just south of the Waxhaw area. The slaves belonging to her mother's parents hid the family's silver from Sherman's men.
My family lived near the area also and had a similar experience.
Silver was also dumped in the nearby Pee Dee River in an effort to hide it from the incoming plaque of locust. They still do what they call "magnet fishing" there, using I guess a heavy net with a magnet attached to bring up silver that might still be submerged.
