Ex-Big Dig chief Amorello arrested for OUI, cops say
Boston Herald ^ | 8/8/10 | O'Ryan Johnson

Matthew Amorello, the disgraced former “Big Dig” honcho who resigned after a fatal tunnel collapse, was arrested for drunken driving early yesterday morning in Haverhill, police said.

Amorello, 52, of Wenham was arrested about 2 a.m. on River Street near a tire shop.

He was taken to the Bailey Boulevard police station and booked for operating under the influence as well as two counts of leaving the scene of property damage, police said.

Police would not say whether Amorello submitted to a breathalyzer nor would they discuss details of the police report. He was held in the lockup until about 8:30 a.m., when his $40 bail was posted.

Amorello listed a Larch Row address in Wenham, though a telephone number listed there was out of service. His family rallied around Amorello yesterday.

“The tunnel collapse was a horrible thing, but it was put up seven years before he got there. He’s the fall guy,” said his brother, Peter.

He said Matt Amorello was surrounded by family yesterday after he was released from jail. Peter said his brother was going through a difficult time prior to the arrest and said it seems as though the press continues to kick him, even though he resigned from state government in July 2006.

“Can you give the guy a break? Please,” Peter Amorello said.

Matt Amorello was appointed chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority in 2002 by acting Gov. Jane Swift. He came under fire for his management of the massive federally funded tunnel project. By the time Amorello left, the price of the Big Dig had climbed by more than $300 million, records show topping off at an estimated $22 billion.

Howie Carr list ping.

Amorello got plenty of ridicule from Howie and when one
WRKO host said, “F— Matt. Wife wears the pants”, he
(John DePetro) was suspended and later fired (after other
remarks about lesbian gov candidate Grace Ross)

Amorello couldn’t even get the name of the victim right. He called her “Melinda (Delvalle)”. It’s Melena.

F-off, Petie. Nobody in the Public Sector deserves a break.

The Big Dig cost more than the English Channel tunnel, but the traffic on it still crawls. Billions for nothing!

$300 million on $22 billion is nothing. BTW how did the big dig get to $22 billion. I thought it was to be about a fifth of that..?

It started a long long time ago under Dukakis. I remember thme peddling the project at $2.5 billion. The budget seemed absurd to me. They were proposing to build seven miles of tunnel for $67,640 per foot. We were building skyscrapers for about $125,000 per foot in the 1970's in Boston. Given the political complications of a public project the real cost was probably doubled to quadrupled to pay off government agencies. One that irked me was the hold that archaeologists had on excavation sites while they sifted through fill looking for broken pottery and trash. The leftists will rewrite history more from ideology than from hard evidence. What a waste.

It’s a sucky road surface, all bumpy. The tiles on the walls are wavy, as are the light fixtures. It shows all the quality we have come to expect in government ‘works’ projects.

I see a union welder, who is just a few years from retirement. He says the whole thing is crap. Crap design, engineered and ordered to be built in the worst way. He says his union will be working on ‘repairs’ on it for a hundred years.

And rumor has it that if you fly over Eastie or Revere you can see those tiles lining the pools of many many people - hmmmm, wonder where those tiles came from, anyone wanna guess?

I've heard the same thing about the South Shore - lots of taxpayer paid pool linings.

I knew of a guy (died a few years ago) borrowed ‘x’ amount of building and electrical supplies working on projects at Fort Devens 40+ years ago. Thanks again taxpayers...

RE: ice cream. According to Howie that was true.

IIRC, RR vetoed the project back then as a boondoggle. Of course, the veto was overridden.

LOL, you and I are probably the only ones who don't have those tiles!

LOL "borrowed" building and electrical supplies! There's a lot of "borrowing" going on in this state!

Amen to that! We missed out on the tile ‘giveaway’...

Oh yeah, I heard the guy brag how he didn’t pay for any of the electrical outlets, bricks, etc. in his house. I guess we were raised with a different definition of the word ‘borrow’, eh?

I’m a product of catholic schools, we were taught never ever to “borrow” anything from anyone - or else we’d burn in hell for etrnity and that “image” was drilled into our heads daily!

Me too! Kindergarten through 8th grade - I warned my parents that there would be a rebellion of epic proportions if I wasn't allowed to go to public high school. They acquiesced. Didn't get a hair cut for almost two years.

Remember - don't eat meat of Friday - or you'll end up sitting next to Satan in Hell. Egads...

LOL, I went all 12 years........so it looks like you missed out on the highschool dances - if you were slow dancing too close the nun would whip out a ruler and put it between the couple and utter those magic words....”leave room for the Holy Ghost” - and the ole “kissing can get you pregnant” - for years we were terrified to kiss - then we figured it out - kissing led to other activities that could lead to pregnancy - ah yes, the good old days!
