Coming out of Indonesia his skills and abilities were probably below grade level so they put him back a year going into the Hawaiian school.

We did the same thing to my step-daughter when we moved from TN to SC. She had been just barely old enough to start 1st grade in TN and she hadn't done well. Next fall when we enrolled her in school in SC, we discussed it with the school and put her in 1st grade again. Since nobody knew her at the new school there was no social stigma of being labeled a failure by her peers.
