The canvassing process in Michigans 1st district, where there is a recount needed to sort out the winner of Tuesdays Republican primary, may start moving faster.
After the initial unofficial vote count, surgeon Dan Benishek was just one vote ahead of state Sen. Jason Allen in the northern Michigan district currently represented by retiring Rep. Bart Stupak (D). The count: 27,091 to 27,090. The winner will face state Rep. Gary McDowell (D) in what is expected to be a very competitive race in November.
Heres what happens next.
Michigan law gives county election boards 14 days to certify results in this case thats an Aug. 17 deadline.
Because this Upper Peninsula district is so large and because of the liklihood of a recount, the state elections director has asked counties whether they could finish the certifications for the House race by the end of next week, said Michigan Department of State spokesman Ken Silfven. If they can, the state board would also review results sooner.
Once the state board reviews what the counties turn in, the campaigns will have 48 hours to request a recount.
The opposing campaign will have a chance to object and make arguments at a hearing. If each step takes the maximum amount of time, the recount process would be completed Sept. 20.
In the meantime, both Republican campaigns operate in a sort of money limbo. They cant use general election funds before becoming the nominee, and are limited to working out of a special account reserved for the recount.

Michigan ping
What a mess! First and foremost, we need to hope for an amicable ending to this with no hard feelings among Republicans. I have no problem with either candidate.
Then that's the way it should end. If history is a guide, anytime the election is this close, it is an open invitation to tampering, at lease when a Democrat is involved.
Good point, but no Democrat is involved in this Republican priamry.
Then, there might not be tampering if there is a recount.
Unless Allen’s SEIU friends are involved in the recount.
I'm afraid the pro-'Rat media is portraying it as more of a mess than it actually is. What we have here is the mathematically very unlikely event of a single vote difference when 54,000+ votes are cast between the two. No evidence of cheating or fraud. (Remember, Al Franken is not involved, and the Secretary of State is a Republican.)
Both candidates should have every reason to continue their campaigns against the Democrat while the primary result is sorted out - honestly. At that point, the primary loser should drop out and magnanimously throw his support to the primary winner in a show of party unity.
Here's hoping that the primary and general election winner will be Dan Benishek.
Here’s a key House race, and one which is in limbo.
