This doesn’ explain compasses going crazy, pilots getting lost and disoriented etc.

Would inhaling a higher concentration of methane cause disorientation or an altered mental status, similar to taking in to much oxygen? And could that mental status cause hallucinations making it seem the compass is going off kilter?

Not arguing, just asking because I have no clue.

When Lake Nyos in Africa turned-over back in 1986, they say the lake turned red due to iron rich sediments in the bottom. (The lake released a huge amount of CO2 that killed thousands of people and livestock.) Perhaps there would also be some iron rich sediment that would be released with a methane bubble, that could mess with your compass.
