I agree with all that you said, my FRiend, but what are we to do?
If all we do is make noise and complain, it will become a reality.
okay. here’s your answer.
first, we stop this foolishness that numerous persons are indulging in here — by that i mean sometimes across f.r. in general — in which we are constantly attacking each other for being insufficiently pure. for chrissakes, someone here actually attacked charles krauthammer a couple of weeks ago! i half expect to see someone posting breaking news that a youtube has been posted in which rush once whistled guantanamera and therefore he is now suspect. we need to identify our ideological enemy and fight that. which means sometimes settling for less than perfection. hell, many people here do not entirely agree with me, yet i tolerate their lamentable imperfection. national politics is and always shall be about the lesser of evils, because the national government itself is a lesser of evils. this means swallowing hard and voting for, say, mccain in the primary if he can win the general, as much as we may admire that part of j.d. hayworth which survived that infomercial thing.
second, we must not piss away all our capital on little brushfires, particularly those that we will lose and that we will look foolish in losing. we are not going to prevent the moslems from building their shrine in new york. we’re just not. we’re very angry about that, as well we might be. but y’know what? the world trade center was in new york city, and if that town is so moronic that it’s willing to allow this obscenity — well, would you expect otherwise?
we need to concentrate on those things on which we have broad philosophical agreement, and work like crazy to turn them in the direction we want. when someone here proposes a boycott of new york city, or says that this person or that is impure because they failed the day’s litmus test, we look like a cross between 1921 russia and the worst of what the other side says about us. at minimum, it makes us seem angry, stupid, non-serious people.
