When I visited the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii a few years back (1990’s) I was struck (astounded, actually) by how many Asians there were there...many of whom appeared to be older.I don’t know if they were Japanese but it seems likely that many were partly because Hawaii was a *huge* tourist destination for the Japanese back then.As I was there one thing I wondered was “are they here out of some sort of shame or remorse or is it a victory lap for them?”
Funny you should ask.
In the late 1990s one of the retired Military guides (Fiske?) who was actually there during the bombing, and who you see on the History Channel, told me that the Japanese tourists come late, when the park is about to close, as to not be the focus of potential anger and or offend the other tourists
Are you out of your mind? The Japs own most of Hawaii. Also, every time I’ve been to the Pearl Harbor memorial there are as many of more Jap nationals there than everyone else put together. Its a very popular holiday destination for them.
