I suspect the shooter really did think he was being discriminated against. People who do what he did always have created some sort of justification for their actions in their own mind. Even people that commit suicide have convinced themselves that it is the correct and justified course of action.

It is human nature to blame others for your failings. Heck, he was probably stealing beer to “get even with the racists”.

That doesn’t mean his opinion was correct.
