Drivers regret Cash for Clunkers leases
Orange County Register ^ | 8/3/2010 | Mary Ann Milbourn

Thousands of people who leased cars last year as part of the Cash for Clunkers program are having second thoughts and are trying to get out of their leases, reports LeaseTrader.com.

The program provided up to a $4,500 rebate if a person signed at least a five-year lease for their car.

A year later, that money has long been spent and people realize they are stuck with the car for four more years, says John Sternal, LeaseTrader.com spokesman.

"I think it's Cash for Clunkers remorse," Sternal says, whose company helps hook up people who want to trade out of their leases with those looking for a lease.

Some drivers want out of the lease for financial reasons but for others it's just not wanting the car.

They woke up last year and saw the Cash for Clunkers program and thought they they could help the environment and the bunnies and the trees and got smaller, environmentally-friendly cars,” Sternal says. “Now they look at that car and think about the really nice car they used to have and think ‘I want something roomier, more luxurious. This contract is bad and I’m not in love.’”

Sternal says the company started getting calls about trading Cash for Clunkers leases in May and now is getting “several hundred” calls a week.

LeaseTrader.com they are getting the most inquiries about Cash for Clunker lease trades from people with Toyota Camrys, Ford Escapes and Honda Accords.

THe salvage yards did not want the 'clunkers' because of the paperwork and the fact that not so much as a screw could be taken off the vehicles before they were crushed.

A lot of newer vehicles and some really nice ones went to the crushers and shredders, removed from the used vehicle and the salvage parts market. Which makes nice, heavier, used vehicles more expensive as well as the parts to keep them going.

In areas like this one, higher ground clearance and enough weight to bust through snow drifts mean the difference between getting there and not, when the weather can easily kill you.

Pity so many of just those sort of vehicles went to the crusher.

I hope the suckers enjoy their little buckboards bouncing down highways deteriorating on 'obamacare'. Or maybe they can take that fast train...

Lets not forget the suckers who over bought on a vehicle they could not afford because of the Obummer money. Predictions were made last year that this will eventually glut the market with repo’ed cars. Looks like this is the first sign of things to come. What a failure.

I have never understood the thinking about leasing a car. Unless you have enough money to do that type of thing. Perhaps there is a financial incentive if you want a new car every two years.

But, if you are hard up for money, why would you turn in a “clunker” that may have had a lot of good use left in it to lease a new car? Other than being able to get out of your 1984 Ford Taurus and into a brand new Lexus to show off to all of your friends.

We thought we missed a good deal on a purchase when we did not buy during cash for clunkers.

A few months after the program ended, we did go back and negotiate for the car we wanted. Our out the door price ended up being lower.

A lease is a stupid idea, regardless if it is a clunkers lease or not.

getting rid of a “paid for” car to stick yourself with a lease agreement in this economy is beyond stupid. This probably helped home defaults rise a little higher.

Well duh. That’s capitalism. If uncle sam starts handing out 4500 dollar vouchers for new cars...GUESS WHAT? Prices will go up about 4500 to compensate for the increased demand.
