Groups Seek Ban on Lead in Sporting Ammunition
NY Times ^ | August 3, 2010 | FELICITY BARRINGER

Lead, for centuries the core ingredient of ammunition, is now coming under attack itself.

As the American military begins to embrace “green bullets,” environmental groups are pushing state and federal officials to ban the use of lead in hunters’ guns and fishermen’s tackle.

Their goal is to protect both the animals that scavenge the carcasses of hunted prey and the people who consume meat from hunting expeditions.

On Tuesday, the Center for Biological Diversity and the American Bird Conservancy plan to file a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency seeking a comprehensive nationwide ban on lead-based sporting ammunition and fishing tackle.

The petitioners argue that “it is now incontrovertible fact” that lead fragments in the bodies of animals shot with lead bullets or lead pellets are “a serious source of lead exposure to scavenging animals” and a health risk to humans who eat hunters’ kills.

Scientists have found that chronic lead poisoning in birds leads to “appetite loss, anemia, anorexia, reproductive or neurological impairment, immune suppression, weakness, and susceptibility to predation and starvation,” the petition said.

Lead’s toxicity has long been known, and most of the uses that led to human exposure, like the manufacture of lead paint, have been banned for decades. Lead ammunition consumed only about 3 percent of the 6.4 million tons of...

“If we had to show major population-level effects on many species to evaluate anything that caused ecological harm, we’d never ban anything,” he said.

--snip--

Ammunition manufacturers have long experimented with alternatives to traditional bullets. Bullets made from copper, bismuth and various alloys have been under development for 20 years or more. In June, the Army announced that it was shipping one million rounds of a new 5.56-mm lead-free cartridge that had been in development for a decade to its troops in Afghanistan...

LOL, that's the ticket - post to yourself as a CYA. What an ego!

You most certainly aren't a scientist.

One of the divisions of the company i work for does residential water service work for a regional water authority. This overs many town, including a failry large New England city.

Great that's not too narrow of a sample.

I started making my own lead fishing sinkers years ago, and asked the crews who do the water service if they ever ran across any lead to let me have it, and to date, i’ve never gotten a single ounc of lead. They brink back tons of scrap copper, galvanized pipe, etc., but never any lead.

Charming hobby, but poor reasoning. Maybe they don't like you. Maybe they simply ignore you. Maybe they encounter lead services, but are encouraged just to bury them in place. Have you penciled out the value of used lead? I don't think it's even worth carrying home - unless it's for a hobby.

Tell me when you're in NY City or Chicago or Pittsburgh and I'll show you some lead services. LOL.

Strange.

Strange indeed!

Posting to yourself and the last one of the thread. LOL!

Give me some statistics. That’s all I ask. None of your rhetoric that’s as stupid as the bogus premise you first laid out.

Post numbers, stats, anything you can find to back your point. I’ve never seen anything that remotely backs yur point, and what I have seen is quite contrary to your point.

Your continued failure to prove your initial premise is telling.

Just post some facts from a reputable source, as your initial “bing search” string proved absolutely nothing.

You got it all backwards. You give me some statistics supporting your claim. You do the research and prove that there aren’t lead water services in the US.

You made the accusation, now support it.

Your single point reference (yourself) isn’t a fact.

You made a bogus claim you can’t back up.

1010RD beats his wife.

Disprove that.

Your bogus claim isn’t fact until you back it up.

I’ve looked, and I cannot find a single claim to either back up your erroneous claim, or substantiate my position, other than tens of thousands of federal, state and local and regional standards for water quality that completely quash your idiotic ignorance.

1010rd, hve you stopped beating your wife and children yet? Do I need to get DCF involved to clear you?

Back up your false allegation or forever be proved to be a liar troll.

Back up YOUR claim! Liar scum.

LOL.

The next time you leave the boondocks for a major city, just ping me or, if you’re wanting your privacy, FReepmail me. I’ll set up a meeting with a local plumber and he’ll show and tell you.

Show and tell, whenever you like.

Show me. Tell me.

You have completely failed to prove your stance.

I take it we are about an hour away from each other 9without commuter traffic. Pm me your email addy, then you can show me how right you are. I take it you cannot prove your point, so i’ll let you help me in my quest for lead to make sinkers from, my new obsession, because no water distric will let people retain lead pipe water service.

Bring it on! Bro! I’ll buy you a case of beer and a lifetime supply of lead fishing sinkers if you can prove that the majoprity of US water services installed in the USA in the last century were installed with lead pipes. That’s your claim, I refuted it, i’d be SHOCKED if you can back it up!

Until then, YOU LOSE.

Simply, I request you back up your completely idiotic claim. Idiotic it is! LOL!

Back up your claim. Until then, you lose.

I live in the New Haven, CT area, btw. I’ll drive an hour or two of you can put 500 lbs of lead in the back of my truck, if your plumber is as good as he claims, because all lead water services must be removed upon finding them.

Saw this article on Drudge and thought of you:

New York City Elevated Lead Levels

From the article itself:

The potential for lead in the water increases in buildings and homes built before 1987, because lead solder was used to seal pipe joints. And for buildings put up before 1961, there’s an even greater concern — because the pipelines that brought water to those homes were made entirely of lead.

In the past decade, other cities have similarly exceeded the EPA benchmark, including Boston, Washington and Portland, Ore.

I'll accept your gracious apology.

FYI we were correct:

Thanks for your honesty and willingness to post it, best FReegards!

I'll accept your gracious apology.

I'm surprised that you think so highly of my opinion that you remember it and highly amused that that you think so highly of yourself that you demand an apololgy from me for my effrontery disagreeing with you. Although I must confess that I never think of you, now that you've posted this insight into your personality I have to say that your arrogance does remind me of someone.

Apology not accepted, but I forgive you nonetheless.

Conservatives are known for their willingness to support the truth even when it is embarrassing or when they were wrong.

Antebellum Southerners were honor bound to seek the truth and support it when they found it.

Christians are also identified by this same trait.

The wicked find the truth hard.

EPA is barred from controlling lead in this instance. See this months NRA Rifleman.
