Unemployment should not last more than a year, forget about 2 years. But there needs to be shelter system so that people don't starve or freeze.

Maybe raising the minimum wage about 10% last summers wasn't a great idea? Maybe we should stop scaring the heck out of potential employers?

I can relate—as a near 60 year old professional, I have lost two jobs in the past two years. Company closings... we are near desparte and doing what we can for ourselves. But I have spent all my 401K and savings, cannot pay for student loans for my son who is now in the Navy and anyway, not whining too much but in my field if I was bi-lingual or female or minority I suspect I would have already been at work.
That is just how it is.
But when a company does hire me they will get one of the best in his field who can meet objectives.
The government has dome immesuarble damage to private manufacturing and it started thirty years ago. Now it has become far worse.

The permanent underclass is growing and growing. Long-term unemployment is the death knell for most individuals and families. If they were smart enough to have savings, they go through that first. Then, sell whatever they can to stay afloat a few more weeks/months. The last resort is cashing in on retirement and investment accounts. When those are gone, they have NO safety net.

In Argentina, by the end of their economic collapse, 60% of the population was at or below poverty level. This absolutely can happen here, and long-term unemployment is paving the way.

That’s not right. You need to put the federal boot on the neck of these small businesses until they start hiring again. Those fatcats need to learn a lesson; send in some swat teams and lawyers.

People need to quit going to college and go to trade school. I completed a 2 yr Industrial Electricity course 30 yrs ago, landed a good job right out of school, then, after 5 or 6 years, I was tired of pulling wire, and went to HVAC night school, two years.

I'm now 55 yrs old, planing on retiring into my own part time business at 60 and I have never heard of (non union) unemployment in either trade. I also look forward to going to work everday...layoffs???? won't happen. Even if it did, I'm state licensed to start my own.

PS,, my dad said there were ads in the paper looking for qualified HVAC tech's yesterday in Ft Walton Bch, Fl... if anyone is looking.

the federal government should confiscate obama’s campaign fund and hand out unemployment. After all he believes in redistribution.

I owe $92,000 for an education which is basically worthless

I have come to believe student loans are a whealth distribution system, only from the middle class (or poor) to educators.

You would have to be crazy to take out a student loan. There is no gurantee that the "education" you recieve will first be worth the money, and two that you will ever earn enough to pay it off. You in effect become an indenture servant for the loaning body.

One of the first things that should be done is get the government out of the student loan business. Second, allow student loans to be cleared in a bankruptcy.

Because the government is involved people are getting loans they will never be able to pay off (hmmmm, where have we seen that happen before?)

And no, I do not have a student loan (I got my education the old fashion way, the GI Bill after service in Viet Nam).

And yes, I believe people should be responsible for their debt, but when people have no jobs, no assets, no hope, and still have a $92,000 non dischargable debt hanging over them, it is difficult to get back on your feet.

Everything the government gets involved in they mess up.

“But there needs to be shelter system so that people don’t starve or freeze.”

The Siren call of Siren calls.

Why do you think they are allowing/helping this to happen? Just so you, and many like you, will spout this nonsense.

THEY NEED TO GET THE F$$$ OUT OF THE WAY SO AMERICANS CAN CREATE THEIR OWN SHELTER AND WARMTH.

Wake up and smell the subversion!

Nevertheless, the political appetite to help people like Ms. Jarrin appears limited.

...

She says none of her three adult sons are in a position to help her.
++++++++++++++++++++++

Excuse me? They are ‘not in a position to help?’ What are they doing that they can’t help their mother through this? And if they’re unemployed themselves, I’d suggest they start growing food NOW in their backyard and everywhere they can raise food. And if they don’t have land, they’d best find those long lost relatives, they may have dissed as country bumpkins and see if they need help on the farm.

I just can’t believe she and they have no options, or are ‘not in a position to help.’ My grandparents and parents used to say ‘where there’s a will there’s a way.’

Someone should poll the unemployed to find out how many of them voted for Obama. Then, offer private aid to those who didn't! BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

google brings up a bunch about her. this looks like her, goes by Sandy Antkievicz and “alleywishes”. a big fan of obama, michelle and huffingtonpost and looks like she’s been tweeting and blogging and lobbying about unemployment since last year... the article doesn’t mention it but it looks like she is originally from pocono mountain area. she seems quite the wandering left-wing political activist....

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft%3Aen-us%3AIE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7DKUS&q=%22alexandra+jarrin%22&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

by the way, the article DOES mention her making $56,000 a year and vacationing in mexico and the carribean, doesn’t look like she was supporting anyone but herself... and she’s worried about her car being repossessed. 2 years on unemployment and she hasn’t changed to a cheapo used car? and too bad she didn’t set aside that fancy vacation money for a rainy day, instead.

no sympathy for her....

It’s amazing how many retired folks are actually working to support extended families. Thanks, Obama.

When Jarrin does finally get a job, she will appreciate it much more. There are states with low unemployment. She might not like the idea of living in the Dakotas or one of the other low unemployment states, but you go where the jobs are. No sympathy for her, just hope that she is able to fix her issues and stick with a job.

How about the last 18 weeks of “unemployment” can only be the difference between their initial unemployment check and the hourly wage of any job they enter.

For example, If my unemploment check is 100, and a new job is 75, then my “extension” benefits would cost the government only 25.

This would both lower the cost to the government and would encourage people to quit waiting for the perfect job and take an available job....even if it is less than what they had. Better than having them end up on welfare.

Unemployment is an insurance policy paid by the employee through payroll deduction and contribution by his employer. That policy has traditionally had a low payout.

Now when extraordinary circumstances arise, catastrophe for many, the policy is paying at rates it would if employees could have contributed to a private plan on their own.

The system is now taking an influx of tax money only because it has been such an inefficiently run government managed benefit.

There is not work out there folks. Nobody is getting rich on their unemployment checks. Cut off the checks and ramp up the soup lines.

The only legitimate complaint is that costs in other parts of the government were not reduced to cover the added cost of continuing unemployment benefits.
