This went way under the radar three weeks ago, but Rudy Giuliani made what, as best as I can tell, were his first public comments about the planned mosque near Ground Zero on the Jeff Katz show on radio (someone will I'm sure correct me if I'm wrong).
He takes a very hard line, including saying that "decent Muslims" will not be offended by the opposition because they want peace as much as others do.
I had been struck by how non-visible Giuliani, who is generally known as the face of Ground Zero, had been on this issue.
Here are as much of the quotes as I was able to cull from the temperamental audio:
"It sends a particularly bad message, particularly (because) of the background of the Imam who is supporting this. This is an Imam who has supported radical causes, who has not been forthright in condemning Islamic (terrorism) and the worst instincts that that brings about.
"So it not only is exactly the wrong place, right at Ground Zero, but it's a mosque supported by an Imam who has a record of support for causes that were sympathetic with terrorism. Come on! We're gonna allow that at Ground Zero?
"This is a desecration," he added. "Nobody would allow something like that at Pearl Harbor. Let's have some respect for who died there and why they died there. Let's not put this off on some kind of politically correct theory.
"I mean, they died there because of Islamic extremist terrorism. They are our enemy, we can say that, the world will not end when we say that. And the reality is it will not and should not insult any decent Muslim because decent Muslims should be as opposed to Islamic extremism as you and I are."
Unlike many posters on FR, who practically called Rudy the Antichrist because he didn't toe the line on abortion.
He would make a damn fine president.
Would the same people that call Rudy the Antichrist call Ronald Reagan the same because he signed the nation's first 'No-Fault' divorce laws into effect as governor of CA? Seems to me RR worked out pretty well.
Unfortuantely, conservatives in the hysteria of the momement seem to have abandoned the first amendment and property rights. Muslims or Nazis or Communists or Militia members should have a right to build wherever they want if they can find a willing seller and no contracts are violated. Flame away.
It doesn’t matter. In the United States, we (allegedly) are dedicated to the first amendment and property rights. That means that anyone (including you hate) should be able to ue their property as they see fit.
I hope that the First Amendment and property rights will protect you when sharia law is established. The First Amendment was written to benefit people and not an ideology.
According to your theory, we should ALSO destroy the first amendment and property rights of others who hate liberty such as socialists, fascists, etc. Be careful what you wish for because you will only give a rope to those who want to hang you on the same basis.
“Hes the only candidate from 2008 Id like to see run in 2012.”
While I commend Rudy for going against the mosque, he’s still a liberal in everything else, except for defense.
Surely we can find many better candidates who are pro-defense AND conservative on other issues.
” he didn’t toe the line on abortion.”
And that’s a big deal - over one million unborn babies killed each and every year, either burned with saline, sucked out, ripped apart, etc..
Plus, that’s not the only liberal stance Rudy has.
“Saw a story on F&F this AM, that the NY powers rfuses to allow a Greek Ortho church to rebuild.”
I’m not surprised. The reason they wanted to build this is because it IS a MOSQUE.
Liberal MENTALity dictates that we make nice with groups that have killed 3,000 Americans in around 30 minutes.
We need a massive Tea Party on this site that involves throwing large amounts of pork products before it’s too late.
Strange that you apparently regard the selective trampling upon of property rights and the first amendment as a “conservative issue.” When big brother does the same thing to you, however, will you still be so willing to tak this position?
Ah, but this would be better: Duncan Hunter, Palin, Bachmann, DeMint, Jindal, Paul Ryan, and more. All pro-LIFE, pro-2nd amendment, etc., UNLIKE RUDY.
“National defense is the priority job of the national government. Article One, Section Eight of the Constitution lists 17 separate powers that are granted to the Congress.”

Protecting American lives is even more important than giving our enemies “property rights,” like Imam Rauf. He should be put on the terrorist watch list, at the VERY least. What do they do with spies? What do they do with treasonous people?
Why is Imam Rauf (who wants to build the mosque) dangerous?
“July 31, 2010
Bin Laden/Al Qaeda Funding Ground Zero Mosque Imam Rauf
snip
Think about this. The duplicitous Imam erecting a triumphal mosque in the shadow of what were the world’s tallest buildings for a time, is funded by the very same Islamic supremacists who attacked and brought down those two buildings ..”
A lot of people think your views are “dangerous” too and, from their standpoint, they may be riht. You’ll be grateful when the same non-selective civil libertarians stand up from those who would deny you to exercise your “dangerous” rights..
Only terrorists, and libs would consider my views as dangerous, and I like that.
I don’t even think that YOU view my ideas as dangerous.
Paul Ryan is the best choice.
Even better than Rudy? (Just teasing, of course.)
A Guiliani/Ryan ticket (again, Rudy would have to be willing to end Roe/Wade)??? That would be a truly kick-ass ticket! That's 16 years of GOP presidency right there.
The difference between you and me is that you apparently trust the people in power (like Obama and Bloomberg???) to make decisions about who is dangerous. I, on the other hand, trust tried and true rules like the first amendment and property rights.
