Israel's president has accused the English of being anti-semitic and claimed that MPs pander to Muslim voters.
Shimon Peres said England was "deeply pro-Arab ... and anti-Israeli", adding: "They always worked against us."
He added: "There is in England a saying that an anti-Semite is someone who hates the Jews more than is necessary."
His remarks, made in an interview on a Jewish website, provoked anger from senior MPs and Jewish leaders who said the 87-year-old president had "got it wrong".
But other groups backed the former Israeli prime minister and said the number of anti-semitic incidents had risen dramatically in the UK in recent years.

Interestingly, Alexander Hamilton probably had more of a Jewish upbringing than Disreali. He was tutored in a private Jewish school in St. Kitts. He had to go to the Jewish school because the Church schools didn’t accept him due to his unmarried parents.
Oh sure, he’s turned a whole generation of people who hate Israel, against Israel.
Give me a hint how I will know that is occurring.
Will the BBC, and your press, defame Israel every five minutes instead of every ten minutes.
Will the British Governmental proclaim that Israel is at fault for instituting a prison camp in Gaza? Sorry, my mistake, your PM already claimed that repulsive defamation when he was kissing Islamic ass last week.
There wasn’t so much of a reason to move *after* WWII. But if Jewish people want to re-create biblical Israel, that’s their fight, not mine.
There was double dealing all around in the 1940s, by the Zionists as well as by everyone else.
But this is pretty remarkable: one off the wall remark by Peres and "the Anglosphere" goes bust.
Yeah, that’s the reason.
You, and your countrymen, are anti Israel because Israelis/Jews like me abuse you.
Mia culpa. Oh my god, what did I do. With my “abuse” (rehashing historical facts) I turned a Brit anti Israel. LOL
Wow...a Brit who doesn't know that the possessive form of "it" is "its," not "it's."
How will Israel ever do without your support?
Who benefits by the ridiculous war of words b/w Brits and Israelis? Muslims. Lay off and focus on your real enemy.
I do know it. It was a mistake (one you’ve never made in your life, I’m sure). Good contribution BTW /sarc
Let me tell you about Israel’s real enemies.
The Islamic enemy would be easily taken care of if not for the support of their Western enablers.
And it is not some ad hock Leftist organizations that are their invaluable supporters.
It is nations such as Britain who succor them.
You going to point out to HearMe that IT’S ad hoc, not ad hock, Captain Spelling?
I apologize profusely for mistyping.
Wasn’t aiming at you.
I am at a loss for words. I’m starting to wonder if the source of this poster’s IP address is a non Israeli middle eastern IP address.
“’Anti-Semetic is only a politically correct way of saying “Jew-hater”. “
I dunno.
The holocaust, in my opinion, could have never happened in England.
Anti-Semitic, if you define it as a bias against Jews and their culture, is appropriate.
Jew-Hatred, if you define it as rounding them up and killing them, is not.
Another aspect of many English is their deep awareness and often disdain for lower social classes - which is another element that most Americans cannot understand - and I see as similar in practice to their Anti-Semitism - in a “they aren’t us, so we don’t want them around us” sort of way.
America, not Israel, is the best place in the world to be Jewish, in my opinion, and in the opinion of my Jewish friends.
Why Jews would vote in large majority for a Muslim incompetent as our president is one of the things I’ll never understand.
Me neither.
The Islamic enemy would easily have been taken care of without nations like Britain? Yeah, the Obama-led USA would be taking the battle to the heart of the muslim world if wasn’t for muzzie-loving Britain holding you back.
Obama has been President for less then two years.
The British have been an enemy of the national Jewish aspiration for a homeland in their ancient lands (Zionism) for near a century.
