Jan Brewer: Fleeting Celebrity or Here to Stay?
The Atlantic ^ | 7-28-10 | Nicole Allan

In a year of fierce re-election battles, one incumbent governor does not have much to worry about. Arizona's Jan Brewer, the Republican secretary of state who assumed the governorship by default after Janet Napolitano became Homeland Security secretary, carries a 19-point lead over Democratic challenger Terry Goddard. Brewer was not a well-known political figure before she became governor, and the state's Republican establishment shunned her after she proposed a sales tax increase two months into her term. Voters were not thrilled either, and a Rasmussen poll from March had her trailing Goddard 36 to 45.

But that was before she became the nation's conservative leader on immigration.

A very interesting and telling example of the power of a single issue to turn public perception around. Especially *this* issue, and when it's a politician who knows how to stand and be true.

“...when it’s a politician who knows how to stand and be true. “

And - single most important character trait we must demand of all our side’s pols - knows how to not take sh*t from the MSM.

Giuliani had this, Christie has this, Brewer has this, McDonald seems to have magic with this and Palin has it in spades.

EVERY DAY republican politicians should check the NY Times, WaPo, etc. and if they AREN’T being called facists and morons they better figure out how they screwed up the day before.

state's Republican establishment shunned her after she proposed a sales tax increase two months into her term.

Because she did the wrong thing. She wasn't thinking about the people she vowed to serve. She wanted to use them as slaves.

she became the nation's conservative leader on immigration.

This was the right thing to do. Now she gets it. She's finally serving the people of Arizona.

I have noticed the difference between Brewer and Sharon Angle. Brewer knows how to play political hardball against the democrats. She knows how to make her attacks against Obama hurt. She makes Obama dance to her tune.

Angle on the other hand, given a chance of a lifetime(Reid lives in a glass house) , has so far blown it. I just hope she learns and gets better but time is short.

Could Brewer's sudden celebrity translate to a national political future somewhere down the line, à la Palin, or is she destined to fade away once the immigration controversy dies down?

The controversy will die down when the problem is solved.

For all the people who call people who want to stop the invasion of illegals "racism" I only have this to say:

It isn't "race-ism", it is OUR country, and we resent people coming in with no regard for the laws we have to obey.

There are legal means of coming to the USA to live, work, and stay permanently. Use them, if you want to come here.

As for the 'give me your poor, yadda yadda yadda", they cane here in droves, legally, passed the physical, learned the language, and did so to become Americans.

They did not demand America learn their language, they didn't wave their old national flag anyplace but beside their new one, they became Americans.

Why should we be browbeaten into kowtowing to invaders who make demands of us in our own country?

I hope Governor Brewer is around a long time, she has sand, she'll stand up and 'speak truth to power' as the libs were so fond of saying, and she'll stick to her guns.

What's more, she's right.

Why does she sound like she just smoked three packs of cigarettes before she went on to be interviewed ?

I think she is cool. But she is no Sarah Palin of course.

I love Jan Brewer and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her, but, bless her heart, she is not presidential. Maybe in a few years she can learn to think far enough ahead of herself so that she doesn’t stumble on sentences. Also, She has a good mind, but she is obviously afraid of reporters. Instead of turning on the reporter and making some comment that will help, she simply turns away and walks off. For example, there has been a question about some organization she supports getting ill-gotten money. I think she has an honest explanation, but she shies away—giving the impression that she has something to hide. I think at the moment, she could lead the people of Arizona toward hell, and we would follow her. But the big time? Maybe after seasoning.

If Jan Brewer wins re-election and serves only one more term, then great. She is 66, after all.

Maybe Sheriff Paul Babeu will run for Governor after Brewer. I think he would be great too.
