Less than two weeks before the Aug. 10 Republican primary, the Senate campaign of former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) is back on.
After calling himself a candidate for Senate in a debate with businessman Peter Schiff Tuesday night, Simmons sent an e-mail to supporters Wednesday that left little doubt he still harbors hopes of defeating Republican Linda McMahon, who was endorsed by the state GOP.
Today, our state and nation still face the daunting challenges which led me to enter the race for U.S. Senate 18 months ago, Simmons wrote in the e-mail message to supporters.
He continued: Republicans need to take a serious look at the candidates and the issues to decide who will stand strongest against [presumed Democratic nominee] Richard Blumenthal and the Democrats in November. While I have no intention of tearing down my fellow Republicans, or undermining our eventual Republican nominee, I believe I provide Republicans with a better choice.
Simmons ended the e-mail with this: This is not a time for slogans or gimmicks, but for serious leadership in serious times. Im Rob Simmons, and Im still on the ballot.
A spokesman for Simmons told The Hill on Wednesday that the candidate has no plans to hire any new campaign staff, but that Simmons will also be attending debates and other political events to which he is invited.
The McMahon campaign dismissed Simmonss restarted campaign.
Simmons walked away from this campaign two months ago, and over the past few weeks his behavior has grown increasingly erratic and bizarre. Its impossible to take his campaign seriously, and its difficult to believe anything he says at this point, McMahon campaign spokesman Shawn McCoy said in a statement.
Simmons suspended his primary campaign after he lost out on the partys endorsement to McMahon in May.
McMahon has largely been focusing her fire on Blumenthal, the states attorney general, since then.
In an interview with The Hill last week, Simmons denied a recent TV ad buy signaled a resumption of his primary campaign. Simmons labeled the ads public service announcements and said he simply wanted to ensure his supporters knew his name remained on the ballot.
Simmons had pledged not to seek the nomination if he didnt win the partys endorsement at the state convention.
Everyone in CT was expecting this to happen.
My question is: can any of these three beat Blumenthal in November? I know little about Connecticut politics, but it is my understanding Blume has a lot of support all across the state.
What is it, besides being a lib dem of course, makes Blumenthal so godlike in CT?
He’s a lib Dem.
What else do you need to know ?
What an ego-driven clown. If he cared a hoot about his supposed Republican principles, he would be concentrating on helping whoever the nominee is have a fighting chance of defeating Richard “the ‘Nam” Blumenthal.
Courant endorses Simmons for primary:
“What is it, besides being a lib dem of course, makes Blumenthal so godlike in CT?”
You tell me, man. I think the guy’s a dork.
He's anti-business and appeals to populism attacks. He supports the unions in an indirect way that frames it as "defending the little guy."
With media support, he gets to champion the 30 jobs he saved without having to answer for the 50 he destroyed/banished.
