To clarify my posts on the subject of Roma, in the UK meticulous records have been kept over the years of each and every resident.

Over 90,000 or so called "Travellers," (a euphemism for "Gipsy,") that have been claimed,by their defenders, is in question. Records show that only about 5000 to 7000 can trace back to the "Romany" origin. Yet all of the politically correct treatments can be claimed by many non-gypsies. Free space to camp, free medical, monies for the "rights" of the indigent and so on.

What a carry on!

There is a description of Gypsies in the novel “Quinten Durward” by Sir Walter Scott. Although written nearly 200 years ago it is just about exactly what we think today. He says btw that they may have originated in Egypt which is where the name comes from.

Very interesting!

In human terms, it does seem a somewhat universal response that grows out of poor conditions in various locations at one time or another, and then the travelling culture becomes entrenched for a small subset of the people. The Irish travellers, for instance, may have come out of the potato famine. Then there are the desert nomads. American Indians once roamed the plains instead of farming. America has overall been so rich (so far) that its camps of trailer residents are relatively upscale; but the Administration is doing all it can to make sure we all race for the bottom....

Civilization as we know it, being bedeviled by those who seem to be able to dodge the demanding ways of gainful employment.... the more these kind of people are tolerated, the more they become arrogant.

Is that ever true! We see it all around. I tremble for this country, which may soon have its own bands of roaming thieves and thugs.

LOL! But in UK, it is regarded as "racist" to object to encampments of gypsies or travellers springing up on the local high school soccer field and trashing it beyond recognition.
