If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.

-----Ann Coulter

Ann Coulter was, as usual, vilified in the press for daring to voice the following sentiment in her latest book:

If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.

Yet doesn't her commentary have some merit? According to John R. Lott, Jr., it does. He suggests that growth in government spending - a Democrat specialty - can be directly linked to women's suffrage, both at the state and federal level because, as he puts it, "women are generally more risk averse than men. Possibly, this is why they are more supportive of government programs to ensure against certain risks in life."

----Pamela Meister, American Thinker

COLMES: We would be a better country? John Derbyshire making the statement, we would be a better country if women did not vote.

DERBYSHIRE: Yeah, probably.

Your using Ann Coulter's argument bemoaning the fact that since women began voting we've been on the road to ruin - is disingenous. You obviously don't understand the point she's making.

Coulter's opinion is correct - that women, especially single women, have bought into the idea that the purpose of government is to take care of people. They might as well have put a sign out: "Marxists Welcomed Here."

But long before modern single women embraced this idea, a large - really large - number of MALE politicians had to buy into it as well. It was MEN who controlled our government and who created and implemented what became known as The Great Society (FDR first, then LBJ and a host of others).

It's apparent that you (and your spouse?) have a deeply-held biblical foundation for your political beliefs. Understanding this gives perspective on your posts and comments.

Ironically, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman and Jan Brewer renounce the idea of government-as-caretaker. They espouse beliefs you claim to have. But if they were Steve Palin, Michael Bachman and John Brewer, you'd be all over it.

So it's not the politics that's important to you - it's the package. You tried to say that Maggie Thatcher is acceptable as a woman leader, knowing there is no one like her in our time (or for that matter, no one like RR).
