July 24, 2010: Maquoketa River water gushes out of the Delhi Dam as areas surrounding the Maquoketa River continue to flood.

Guess I should consider myself lucky to live above an earthen dam that’s only about 20 years old. We’ve been getting soaked for weeks here in southern michigan.

FOX doesn’t mention fatalities, so I assume that there were none. Good news. Sympathy to those whose homes were inundated.
Wish we could get some of that rain here in Texas.

Iowa and much of the Upper Midwest have been pounded by a series of five to seven inch rains. It just won’t turn off.

We have had some spectacular light shows though.

Did they get that Cadillac truck out of the sink hole in Milwaukee ?

I love it when the lightning crawls along the bottom of the clouds like that. I was tempted to get up at 4AM this morning for some pictures but it started pouring before I decided.

Great photography. Just in case someone has never said it before, you take great pictures. I love them.

Ironically, my daughter and I were driving on Hwy 20 just east of Manchester and crossed the highly flooded Maquoketa River north of where the dam broke at about the time the dam broke.
We witnessed lots of water in IL and Iowa.
To: cripplecreek
Did you take that? I’ve tried to take photos of lightning but I’m not a proficient in photography.

Yeah. Actually its deceptively simple. All you need is a tripod, a remote shutter release and a camera capable of the right settings.
I had the camera on manual mode and a bulb setting so I could take an exposure as long as I needed. I used ISO 400 @ f/10.
The lightning itself is pretty bright so small apeture is preferable. I just held the shutter open for 20 or 30 seconds till I get a lightning bold and close the shutter.
