The funny thing is the Pilgrims kept things kosher - no crabs, lobsters, etc - they almost starved (1/2 did) because they wouldn’t eat anything found on the beach.
Add to Hayim Solomon the name of Aaron Lopez, who owned a shipping company out of Newport, Rhode Island. Lopez used his ships to support the Revolution and as a result lost his fleet and his fortune.
Most of the early Jewish population was Sephardic, rooted in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and North Africa (hence the frequency of Spanish surnames).
