Iran's Mini-Empire At The U.N.
Forbes ^ | 07.23.10 | Claudia Rosett

Despite sanctions, Iran continues to exploit the U.N. itself.

The United Nations has just created a new "entity" on women's rights, called U.N. Women. Elections to its governing board are now being organized. How long before Iran wins a seat?

If the question sounds absurd, the realities at the U.N. are even more mind-bending. The most recent high-profile outrage on this score was Iran gaining a seat in April on the U.N.'s Commission on the Status of Women. But that's the least of it. The reality is that Iran, despite being under four sets of binding sanctions resolutions by the U.N. Security Council, has learned to manipulate the institution in ways that make a mockery not only of the U.N. itself, but also of U.S. claims of diplomatic competence.

Rarely remarked upon, but even more appalling than Iran's beachhead on the women's rights commission, is Iran's seat on the 36-member executive board of the U.N.'s flagship agency, the U.N. Development Program, headquartered in New York. Iran actually chaired the UNDP executive board last year, during the thick of the bloody protests in which Teheran's mullocracy was beating, jailing and killing protesters calling for democratic development in Iran.

That same UNDP executive board, with Iran still in its lineup today, also serves as the governing body for the U.N. population fund (UNFPA) and the U.N. Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). Iran's three-year term on the UNDP board expires at the end of 2010. But have no fear that Iran will be shut out of U.N. high councils on the status of women--or, for that matter, issues involving children and food aid. ...

So the UN takes stands on human rights issues then they pretend that none of their member nations are engaged in any human rights abuses. So who is causing all of the human rights abuses - martians?

The UN ? Irrelevant as a legitimate purveyor of peace, freedom and rights. The original concept of the UN , its mandate has been hijacked and is now a muslim organization. I am suprised that Iran hasn’t already hijacked it as its personal army, but its probably in the making and just a matter of time. This is all very evident when you look at their opinions on little Israel, the only democracy in the mideast....and hope for mankind there.

You forgot the Jewish State of Israel, which uniquely gets no respect within the punching bag of the United Nations.

Defund and pull out of the UN.
Nothing good has ever come out of this nest of diabolical elitist vermin.

They could not save Srebrenica nor even hapless Rwanda when run by an African. An overpriced featherbed for elite scum.

Close it down and never send them another cent.

“Close it down and never send them another cent.”

Well put. The UN, for all intensive purposes, is dead.

It is a worthless organization with no will to do much of anything - other than pass meaningless resolutions.

There is an almost genetic dislike of anything US and/or Israel-related.

We have had Republican presidents (Reagan, Bush I and Bush II) who had a chance to reform the UN by theatening defunding or asking them to move from New York - but to the best of my knowledge, they didn’t.

Sooner or later, we (the US) needs to tell the UN “We can see that we’re not welcome and frankly, you’re not welcome here. Please leave - NOW!”
