Hernando sheriff wants more money for county jail

BROOKSVILLE — Sheriff Richard Nugent is requesting $10.9 million from the county to run the Hernando County Jail next year, an amount that tops the current budget by more than a quarter-million dollars.

Not only is it more than the County Commission had previously approved, it also is at odds with Nugent's earlier assertions that he could operate the facility for less than the amount the private company running the jail has charged.

Our "Fiscally conservative" sheriff and candidate for congress told an audience at a debate in Pasco county Wednesday that he would "return" about a half million dollars from the budget for the jail. I knew most of his statements came with an expiration date. Lately it looks like that expiration date is two or three days.

The sheriff could do the smart thing here and say, "The jail was worse than I had been led to believe, and I need to concentrate on that full time. I'll drop out of the 5th district Congressional race."

More likely he'll continue running in the hopes that he can get some earmarks (or work with some federal agency to get it in their "normal budget process") to cover the jail costs.

Perhaps Sheriff Nugent should first have a conference call with his counterpart in Maricopa County.

Sheriff Joe might be willing to share some ideas on how to cut down the cost of feeding the inmates and cutting the cost of doing business as he did in his own hoosegow.

Tell him to contact another sheriff for advice.

I think Joe Arpaio would be willing to help....

Howsabout a ring of nice bob wire around some cheap (maybe FREE) GI tents?

What’s the party of this sheriff?

Since he’s unable to stick to a budget, something tells me there’s a “D” in there somewhere.

Funny you should mention that. During the debate Wedenesday, Sager suggested that expensive building repairs and laundry problems at the Hernando county jail could be solved with tents and pink underwear, like Sheriff Joe Joe Arpaio uses. The line was good for some applause from the audience there.

Nugent pointed out (correctly IMHO) that we have hurricanes here in FL and having a tent prison wiped out by a hurricane and all the (surviving) prisoners escape due to weather would be a very bad thing.

But check out the videos from George from New England, he has the sheriff in there claiming that he will save money for the county by running the jail. Maybe someone can tell us which segment and the time where he discussed this. I have to go right now, or I would watch them myself and tell you exactly where it happened.

He's a RINO (hence the RINO with the badge in my sig). Click through on the images in my sig for more info about this "hand picked successor" to Ginny Brown-Waite.
