You’re getting beyond my knowledge of the history there. Sounds very pragmatic, though.
On a related note, if you’ve never read Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia, on his time fighting in the Spanish Civil War, I highly recommend it. It is a short read, and shows what happens when a Leftist encounters hardcore Leftists. (spoiler - he almost gets killed as a not-true-enough believer)
Quite the wake up call.
Another good book is “The Breaking Point: Hemingway, Dos Passos, and the Murder of Jose Robles.” Dos Passos was the leading liberal writer of the time. His mentor, Robles, was murdered in Spain. Hemmingway sold out to Stalin’s Popular Front while Dos Passos did not. Book tells of how Hemmingway was hung-over/drunk before a speech he was about to give at Madison Square Garden in support of the Popular Front. He told Dos Passos if he didn’t do it, his career would be over.
