Actually, there was a black presence on Martha’s Vineyard since the 19th century. Oak Bluffs was the area on the island for Methodist Camp meetings and many of the faithful rented or bought houses to stay in. I would assume that this area was more welcoming to the professional black who wanted to vacation in a resort area. However, they were never in the majority, and I recall when I visited the Vineyard many years ago as a young woman, I do not recall seeing one black person there. You may be right. Perhaps the Obamas preference for the spot might make it the vacation destination for black people.
