Matthew Slider is a 19-year-old sophomore at Florida State University. He enjoys posting videos to YouTube of himself and his friends goofing off, listens to the band Death Cab for Cutie and is a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
He's also chairman of a political action committee that sent mailers to voters in Naples this week attacking congressional candidate Joe Garcia for the oil spill in the Gulf.
The mailer says Garcia, a Democrat running for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, ``was with the Department of Energy and responsible for this catastrophe.''
The back of the mailer shows a picture of Garcia superimposed on top of a picture of the Cuban flag with the international ``No'' slash going through his face. The group that funded the mailers, Progressives for Prosperity, registered with the IRS on Monday, and information on where its money is coming from or what it does is not available online. The mailers say they are not sponsored by any candidate.
``I've been told not to talk too much to reporters,'' said Slider, reached by phone. ``But I can tell you that I'm committed to electing Democrats to Congress.''
He didn't explain why, in this case, he appeared to be attacking a Democrat, and he declined to comment further. Garcia worked for the Department of Energy as head of the Office of Minority Economic Impact from 2009 until he decided to run in this year's race, and had no involvement in oil policy.
Garcia said he believes his rival, Republican State Rep. David Rivera, is behind Progressives for Prosperity. Rivera's campaign denies it.
Matthew Slider's Facebook page doesn't list a political affiliation but has a quote from President Barack Obama under ``favorite quotations'' and lists him as a fan of conservative Republican Mike Huckabee.
The media never bothered to mention how it was that the Democrats selected the GOP's 2008 presidential nominee, John McCain, just as they tried to do in 2000.
Committed to democrats, instead of the best candidate for the job. That is just one of the problems with politics today.
I just joined freep today (but have been visiting for a long time) and it seems my statement is already proven true. 'I happen to be trapped in the progressive dreamworld known as college.' Even more applaud to my statement, is that this guy goes to the same college as me....
Could be a little subterfuge here and the Leftist media is probably having a little heartburn. After all, 5th column tactics have always been the sole province of the Left. Students and the young are by nature rebellious and many actually recognize and are repelled by an authoritarian regime. What a great way a young person to quench their desire for sophomoric fun and fight tyranny of the ruling class.
