It took two weeks for everyone in America to get indignant about the oil spill. Many people suddenly were convinced of the health hazards of chemical dispersants. Dozens of Congressmen became experts on the proper variety of well casing to use when drilling for oil.
But when the oil stops gushing and the summer ends, are we going to realize this damage has all been vastly overblown?
It doesn't get much attention, but there's been a steady trickle of good news about the aftermath. Yesterday NOAA said it was re-opening one third of the closed Gulf fishing area, where oil hadn't been spotted for 30 days. NOAA has also said all seafood tested from areas where fishing was permitted has been safe to eat. Last night Admiral Allen flew over the area and there is not a lot of oil in the water out there
And currently only one major beach is closed and three are open with a swimming advisory. Other beaches are open with nothing but a sign advising people not to swim in patches of oil. In other words, the government thinks the oil spill is not a significant health risk for humans. Sure there are plenty of people reporting headaches and other purportedly oil-related ailments, but these could be temporary or imagined. Or they could be limited, enough for a few major lawsuits, but not the end of civilization.
As for other animals and the environment, no one knows, though again, everyone has a theory. One day everyone was passing around the theory of methane dinosaur extinction and talking about how the Gulf of Mexico methane bubble could kill all life on Earth -- well, turns out the scientist who invented that theory was talking about a different kind of methane.

Oil washes up in tar balls on Santa Barbara beaches continuously, and has for millions of years. Oil spills are all overblown, they are like forest fires and nature recovers very quickly. Drill baby drill.....but lets keep it in shallow waters so we can easily stop any blowouts. Offshore rigs ruining the ocean view of rich liberals is icing on the cake.
How would they know? No one is reporting on the devastation and I have not seen pics in a while.
All that oil mysteriously vanished?
Offshore rigs ruining the ocean view of rich liberals is icing on the cake.

We think alike.
If the oil spill remains under control, the only longer term environment damage will likely be in marshes of Louisiana. Other areas where oil moved in will recover quickly.
Obama’s bungling and incompetent ‘leadership’, and the economic damage caused by his decisions will be the longest lasting impact.
How can we believe anything the ‘Obama Tribe Press’ and the ruling class even says anymore? We can’t....plain and simple.
The media has given most people the impression that the entire Gulf is one big oil pit. Doesn't matter if it really is or not, it's going to take a long time to change the minds of gullible people.
One good thing, I doubt if florida goes blue
Overblown?
This guys seems disconnected from the political reality that’s created a network of vulnerabilities for the U.S. - many of those vulnerabilities have already become liabilities and tragedies.
I'm not going to buy into the "imagined" BS. There could be significant health risks. BP bought off the Professor (I forget the name) who was reporting high levels of Hydra Sulphides and Benzene compounds that are 1000 X above “safe for human” levels.
Journolist...
How would those toxins compare in volume and toxicity to what underwater volcanoes and thermal vents around the globe spew into the oceans on a continual basis since the formation of the seas?
Got a reference for that?
Isn’t corexit made of benzene? I read they were limited to 15,000 gallons/day of Nalco’s product (corp. HQ, in IL).
Friends, oil is a substance created by nature. Nature also has powerful forces which tend to bring things back to pristine condition after a while.
The best thing to do is to remove all government employees 300 miles from the region and give it 2 years, and things will rebound.
>>Most people I talk to won’t go there for a long time, or eat any seafood that comes from the area.<<
Wow, most people I talk to up here in MI are thrilled to get cheap seafood!
Now most people I know won’t go there, but not because of oil. Because of the economy. Actually, the people in my area don’t really give much thought to the oil.
Yeah, they’re not going to get huge money for those seaside resorts, but you give an American a bargain and he’ll take it. Money talks and travel agents can sell a bargain.
People aren’t stupid.
>>If the cap blows off tomorrow are the well blows out that is suppose to be the pressure relief what happens then. !!! <<
Then we go off in another direction.
For heaven’s sake, don’t panic over tomorrow.
I think the answer might be there. BP tells the EPA that the alternatives are more toxic and unavailable in any significant amount.
