Having been the neighbor of some big people on airplanes I’d say it is fair.
Its not fair to other passengers to have sweaty folds of fat lopped over into their seat. The answer may be to make bigger seats, which would make everyone happy.
Oh, so making seats bigger = fewer seats = more expensive flights = we ALL pay for people who can’t shut their pie hole!
Spreading the wealth??????
Except that bigger seats mean fewer seats per airplane, which means that every passenger pays a higher proportion of the cost of operating the flight, which makes everyone unhappy except for the lardos.
My husband and I just had this experience with a very overweight passenger. We had a flight on Jet Blue to Las Vegas. We always spend the extra money for the seats with more leg room and usually reserve the aisle and middle seats because we find that most people won’t pay the extra for the middle seat. This flight took on standby passengers and just before the door was about to be closed a guy weighing close to 300 pounds plops himself down between us. He slept most of the flight with his hambone arms on both of our armrests. Miserable flight.
You are so right. Spouse and I have watch for years how people are getting fatter and fatter. Several of the restaurants we go to have even replaced the chairs they had for bigger ones. The airlines have small chairs because customers used to be small. Now they need to enlarge the seats to accommodate this new generation of fatties.
