My part-time City Council is asking for a 50% pay increase on this fall's ballot (as they do every year). Even the conservative pundits are for it, arguing that it will attract better talent.

I've never seen proof of that. It seems the most corrupt and poorly-run cities supply massive salaries to their mayor and city council. What difference does it make, if the voters put dirtbags in office, over and over again? You get expensive corrupt politicians instead of cheap ones. Might as well keep the cheap ones.
