BP's Deepwater Oil Spill - Time is Not Our Friend - (Why gov. does not work)
The Oil Drum ^ | June 21, 2010 | Heading Out

Posted on 07/21/2010 6:38:18 AM PDT by Hojczyk

There is a certain frustration in hearing some of the officials who act as spokesmen for the management team handling the spill from the Deepwater well in the Gulf of Mexico. Their evaluation of the situation is bound around a full collection and compilation of the existing evidence, a comprehensive and contemplative understanding through a scientific explanation of the causes of whatever anomalies and other behavior that is not following the model anticipated, and subsequently then working out the best steps forward and determining the potential benefits relative to alternative approaches.

Well, on the one hand, if they have had a week’s window to top kill the well, and they had to use 6 days convincing the government to let them do it, then government was a real problem.

On the other hand, government IS supposed to be a watchdog for those who have already proven they cannot be trusted. So it’s hard to fault the caution with BP at this point. I think it’s a bad thing, and wish they’d just let BP get the job done, but still....

Worse though is the government’s second-guessing and shutting down state attempts to protect themselves. Letting oil kill the sealife because you are afraid that a sand berm MIGHT kill the sealife is exactly why government can’t legislate disaster relief. They are great at dangers they have known from decades ago, and lousy at writing laws that allow people to use common sense.

Our whole system of government is based on people being left to their common sense, with government acting when people fail. But now we want government to force common sense on people.

Thanks for posting this....from the Oildrum and the thread there for today:

****************************Excerpt**********************************

As seen at http://ht.ly/2eATr

"With another opening in Port St. Joe last week, the Florida Panhandle now has four branch offices dedicated to providing coordinated and rapid oil spill response efforts to nearshore and inland waterway areas."

Lemmie see . . . oil hasn't been flowing into the gulf for over a week now - and here we are 90-something days into the spill, and the Obama administration is just NOW opening a "rapid response" office?

Good think the response was rapid . . . geeze . . .

Heads up on the ROV feeds. Oly Rov 1 is on a smoker coming form the sea bed. Very difficult to see. Lighting is low. They are a distance away. Coming from upper center of image. Plumes or clouds traveling up to the top of screen. Need to view in low lighting.

Also Boa Deep C2 showing some very unusual up and down current. Unusual for 1 mile down. Oly Rov 2 has intermittent clouds or plumes that move right to left. When it pans up they are more visible.

Well with a VP nicknamed “slow Joe”, just what should we expect.

I have been observing for the past hour or so. The almost white constant wispy plumes from Oly Rov 2 as well as the clouds getting kick up on the bottom at Skandi 2, etc..
None of appear to be the dark oil plume we have grown to notice. Perhaps they are doing a lot of clean up work on the sea floor bed in this vacinity, and who knows...kicking up the bottom in the one case to take samples.
I don't discount anything at this point. Broken or loose hydrylic line perhaps in the case of the wispy white plumes.
But it does appear there are heavier then usual current at the sea floor.

Whoops. Large constant white wispy plumes from right to left in Oly ROV 1, is what I meant to say. Strange. Like a stationary camera along side a burning building with a right to left breeze.

You could see the smokers better on Oly ROV 1 earlier when I first noted it. They have been panning around a lot since then. By the time I remembered how to save a screen image in Firefox, it had gotten more difficult to see them. Right now the entire area is getting obscured with the discharge of multiple smokers. Oly ROV 2 is I believe showing some of the discharge from these smokers as clouds that move occasionally right to left. Oly Rov 2 is looking at the BOP assembly. Worse case would be they obscure the BOP and make work impossible. They needed to have the Top Kill and RW 1 ready to go when the Shut In was done. Apparently they only had one little over a week to work. That is a very strange pattern in the sea floor that Oly ROV 1 is showing right now. Keep an eye on those round depressions in the lower right corner. Were only two of them 20 - 30 minutes ago. Now three. My guess is, and it could be wrong because image quality now is much worse then this morning due to turbidity, but those depressions are actually smokers. Discharge moving down and slightly left. Need image enhancement to see them though. At any rate, shes a smoking. Expect visibility to get worse every hour. Just concentrate on visualizing smokers and you might get a grasp of what BP/Obama is seeing in high resolution.

They moved Oly 1 to a different spot now. Got to run. Will be back later. Gonna get interesting, is my guess.

Yeah. Something taint right. We shall eventually see what is going on. As you indicated some of the views are tough to distinguish just what changes on the sea floor. And the bandwidth I have to put up with is tough. Many of the individual ROV videos often look like still shots. Then minutes later one or more will show a few seconds of action. Sort of a pain in the tail.

Been getting good frame update from the actual BP site. Here is the link. When I do see something that looks interesting, open that ROV up in a large new window.

BP Web Cams

You would not believe what I saw this morning at around 5am. Unbelievable. Might have been the first smokers breaking through. They were white sedimentary based smokers. They formed a long funnel plume over head. The ones now look gray.

BTW - If I see something that looks like a smoker, will ping you here or will at least ping the latest oil spill thread. And it is probably not correct to call them smokers, since we are not dealing with volcanic activity. They really are plumers, but that is not a word yet.

This stuff can give one a headache after a while. Obviously we are only getting to see what they will allow. Oly ROV 1 continues to zero in on that one area. Skandi ROV 2 goes wherever. Mostly of lately zeroing in on what area of the surface floor. I tried your BP feed. It is the one I used to use. It is a bit better now then the total multiple twelve shot screen have been using since you offered the feed days back.
As I write I now notice no white or grey plumes in any of the views. But as you said, some of the ROV's appear to be getting pushed around by strong currents. Then things will quiet down.
Thanks for the offer of pinging me. But I am ready to take your word for observations you have made that no longer may be active.
I probably will be signing off shortly. But do ping if something realy significant appears to be happening on a regular basis.
As your aware Ernest is pretty keen on using his ping lists on things he feels have significance. So one way or another I end up getting informed. Don't feel obligated in other words if you feel you forgot to ping me.

Sure thing. Cannot believe the Oil Drum was silent on the plume/smoker sightings. BTW - Check out this link in case you missed any of the leaks in the stack. Nite.

Just getting back here after an extended absence for extended viewing of Kudlow, the Factor, Hannity, and Greta...

Obama is screwing up royally...

And lexmark only has a 32 bit driver for the Pro805 printer I got at a special price,...and now I am meditating.

I can run it off of my laptop but that isn't what I wanted....ARGH!

That is why I continue to hold back from buying a new system which I really do have to do. I can't even few all the tons of CSPAN stuff on many issues due to them suddenly not supporting my players and browsers. Which I cannot upgrade due to ME no longer being supported by the newer flash and media players as well as Fire Fox browser.
So I partly feel your pain.
Meanwhile. Just pinged you on the fed judge in Alaska shutting down gas and oil. Blaming it on a screwed up Federal system that cannot properly monitor and regulate gas and oil exploration. What a crock!
