It’s my understanding that we won the war, then abandoned our ally, South Vietnam.

Winning the war was right. Abandoning our ally was wrong. We abandoned South Vietnam by cutting off funding and publicly reneging on promises to support South Vietnam in the event of a conventional attack by North Vietnam. The communists resumed the war, and two years after US troops returned home, South Vietnam fell. Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia became communist and 3-5 million people were murdered.

I’ve heard the claim that the war slowed the communists and bought time for other countries (Indonesia?). That may be very significant.

There is a book out, The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Vietnam War, that should be good.

So do you think the possibility that we kept Indonesia, a Muslim country, free from Communism was worth 58,000 American lives?

We have to stop being the cheerleaders for politicians who send our children off to war for reasons that have nothing to do with American security. I was all for the Vietnam War (believing the government’s propaganda) while it was going on, but afterwards I saw how we had been lied to and manipulated. I hope LBJ is forced to look for all eternity at the faces of the people whose lives he ended or ruined.
