Father wants Las Vegas police held accountable in son's death
Las Vegas Review ^ | Jul. 16, 2010 | By LAWRENCE MOWER

A few years ago, when Erik Scott found himself unemployed in the midst of Las Vegas' deepest recession, his father worried about where his son would find work.

But Erik just laughed. He never worried. The West Point graduate told his father he would get a haircut, buy a suit and look for a new job. "We always laughed about the Erik Scott luck," his father, Bill Scott, said Thursday. "It just always seemed to go his way until July 10, 2010. It went totally against him."

Bill Scott, a former Air Force colonel, and a journalist and author, said his son's death at the hands of three Las Vegas police officers in front of a Costco store Saturday would give voice to other citizens killed by police.

Happens all the time.

Yep. Happened to hubby in real life. Driving home one night in his tinkermobile, it had the bad timing to backfire as he was passed by a cop.

The cop immediately called his buddies, saying he had been shot at [?], and about half a dozen of them pulled hubby over.

He's sitting in the truck with one cop yelling "Keep your hand where we can see them!" while another screams "Get out of the truck!". Poor hubby doesn't know what the Hell to do, because he can't do both at the same time.......

Thankfully, it worked itself out, but only AFTER he had been drug out of the truck and thrown to the ground.

There seems to be a problem with it.

My guess: A black cop shot him.
The rules have changed.

They’ve checked for video evidence, but every camera in the store was mysteriously malfunctioning at the time. So we will just have to accept the Cosco employee’s sworn testimony. < / sarcasm >

"...mysteriously malfunctioning at the time..."

Signals from the mother ship disabled the video cameras.

That Costco employee incited a murder, simply because the citizen didn’t follow their instructions to the letter. The cops are guilty of murder and the Costco employee is an accessory.

>>I would modify that a little to saying loudly “I am licensed to carry a concealed firearm”. Yelling out “I’ve got a gun” might not be a good thing.<<

Better than mine. Thanks!

>>Oakland transit cop shoots unarmed, handcuffed man in the back and gets off with manslaughter<<

He was not cuffed. They were attempting to cuff him.
The taser that they have looks and feels like a gun.

It was a mistake. It was not premeditated and that is why the cop got manslaughter.

Read through the FR threads and you will see that this is true.

I’ve read that many of the gray camera globes in those stores do not have a camera in them. cameras are expensive

I agree that the employee elevated the situation, however, that does not excuse the behavior of the cops. They are supposed to be trained to respond to situations where the caller is most likely hysterical.

If there are any cops or ex cops out there that will come forward and say that proper police procedure for a disturbance call is to have weapons drawn on innocent people? The FACT is, that Erik NEVER had the gun in his hands inside the store or outside. There was no reason to lay in wait with weapons drawn. It seems to me, that the police arrived and never even made an attempt to assess the situation and allowed this supposed “kind of” beserk man to mingle amongst the rest of the customers.

Yeah, they are. I picked up one for $13 at Big Lots which I’m going to install on my front porch.

I’ve wondered about the Costco female employee who is responsible for the police being involved. From the multiple accounts I’ve read , she at the very least seems to have over reacted, and *may* have lied (or at least wildly exaggerated) about the murdered man “destroying merchandise” , possibly because she feared the police would be angry at her if they thought she’d called them to the store for no real reason. Is it possible her motives included racial or ethnic dislike? If the case comes to court and she is called to testify, we’ll know then...Maybe.

Maybe it was ethnically/racially based, but without specific information to that end I’d presume that it’s more likely that she was virulently anti-gun and exaggerated the situation to the cops to get them to respond.

I've watched the video of the incident and it doesn't look like he was struggling in that, certainly not enough to justify shooting him. And if the cops in Oakland can't tell the difference between a pistol or a taser then these guys in Las Vegas sure look like genius's by comparison. Let 'em off and give them the key to the city.

Possibly virulently anti male, too, given the education standards at too many colleges these days. :-( It will be interesting to see just *what* comes out if the case-and the surveillance tape-makes it to court. But that’s a big if-I expect a quiet out of court settlement, and the blogosphere can speculate on what *really* happened till the end of days. :-( Let us hope that, even if the public never gets any answers, then the police department will take a hard look at what happened and take steps to prevent future, avoidable tragedies.

Career criminals, like the cops usually would be dealing with, “kow the drill.” They’ve been in trouble with the law enough they know what to do if so confronted as if second nature. But law abiding citizens don’t automatically know what posture to assume. And it would fly all over me, if I am breaking no law and a cop not only wants to arrest me, but he wants me “Down on the ground—now!!”

I agree. My first reaction would be "What the...?" Then I'd try to explain or show that I wasn't a threat. And I'd probably get blown away like the victim in this case was. None of the witnesses have given any indication that he was beligerent or argumentative or threatening in any way. This appears to be a very bad and ultimately tragic performance by the police. I don't think that Gill Grissom and his team from CSI will be able to pull this one out of the fire.
