I won't own a device that I can't have access to root (or burn a new boot rom, if I desire). I've spent too many years on unix of various flavors. I buy it, it's mine.

As for your book question, no, I don't mind the glow in the dark feature, but I did once move my cell phone to turn the page on the paper book I was reading while in a waiting room. I read LOTS of PDF files from the old books on google.
