BP's work on capping the Gulf of Mexico gusher was frozen Wednesday after the federal government raised concerns the operation could put damaging pressure on the busted well that could make the leak worse.
An administration official, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the talks with BP, said the government was acting out of "abundance of caution" and didn't want potentially dangerous pressure tests on a tighter containment cap that has been placed over the well to go ahead until BP answers questions about possible risks.
At the same time, BP on its own halted the drilling of two relief wells that are designed to be a more permanent solution to plug the well.
The delays were a stunning setback after the oil giant finally seemed to be on track following nearly three months of failed attempts to stop the spill, which has sullied beaches from Florida to Texas and decimated the multibillion dollar fishing industry.

So where is Mr. “plug the damn hole” now?
Politics... and an agenda.. to strangle this nation’s economy .. one well-head at a time.
The “Environmental” President.
Harry Reid has not yet got Cap and Trade passed. He said on Monday he would introduce it this week.
When things don’t seem right, they probably aren’t.
Don’t want to waste the crisis do we?
This is a classic ‘desiged-by-committee’ result. You get the gov’t and ‘experts’ together, and between them, they come up with enough ‘what if?’ scenarios that everyone is paralyzed and nobody gets anything done.
Sometimes, you just have to take your best shot and see how it goes. Then you can change directions if necessary.
They say they’re worried that it will make matters worse but they kept claiming BP was already in the worst case scenario with no real solutions.
My kingdom for an ‘n’...
The Obama Feds just want to include themselves in the conversation, so in ten day from now when they give the final go ahead to plug the leak.they will take credit for it and of course the lap dog media will follow the lead with headlines “OBAMA GIVES GO AHEAD TO PLUG OIL LEAK” or “FEDS MOVE IN TO STOP LEAK!”
You could sort of see this coming in their exchange of letters. The government wanted BP to guarantee the outcome, and BP kept saying it wouldn’t know what the outcome was until it did the test. So essentially this is a pause for the Feds to try to find a way to avoid the blame in case something goes wrong. Time for BP to just say, “screw it”, hook up the third production facility and wait a month for the kill well to work. As long as all the leak is being captured, the only risk from waiting is hurricanes.
The more it pours oil, the more he gets the love of the ‘greenies’, backs their goals..
The problem is that they stopped the relief wells also.
What a bunch of stupid jerks! I guess they had to ask an ‘expert’ who has no damn clue what they are talking about.
Obama, STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH EVERYTHING! You are ruining people's lives!
Questions, my derriere. I wonder if there’s some stock manipulation going on. BP caps that well, the company’ll be a lot more expensive...
They stopped the relief wells for fear the test would result in pressure that could cause problems at the relief well (they are only 4 feet away now).
But with the pressure test delayed, how long do you wait with the relief well waiting for the pressure test to be completed?
Surely the “federal government” knows more about what BP is doing than BP’s own engineers ...
sarc
The second well is a planned stop, they’re going to leave it there unless needed. The first one was just a precaution in case the test went bad. They can restart it with a phone call.
Yep. Classic CF.
Funny thing is, this is coming from the same guys who were demanding timelines last week, trying to convey the impression that BP was stalling.
Amazing a complete idiot and fool like Barry could do this now.
These MFers are making politics personal for a whole sh!tload of folks with guns.
