My simple explanation is that Christianity is all about the free will to trust in God but its also about the free will to suffer the consequences of turning away from God.

Free will does not survive collectivism.

No collectivist system (ie. government) whether democratic or socialist can ever be righteous if peopled by sinful, prideful man. Change must come a soul at a time because only when you change individual hearts can justice occur. Never once did Christ suggest a colletive atonement for individual sin. You cannot outsourch your moral obligations to the government.
