Here is a link to a video of the spool piece being installed. At about 8 seconds in there is a quick cut. At that point you can see the spool piece beginning to enter the top of the BOP stack. There is no visible oil emerging. The Helix is connected to the choke line. The end of the leaking oil may be nigh!

They haven’t placed the new cap yet. The oil is coming out of the new BOP higher up.

Anybody know why they can do this now and not months ago? What changed? As I understand it, this is independent of the relief/kill well drilling, which is almost complete?

Yesterdays Oildrum dicussion had some saying everything could have been done sooner.

Some on there say that is not true,....for technical reasons.

Kind of off-topic, but do you have any idea what it is that Enterprise ROV-2 is showing? For the past day, it’s been looking at something that is a pipe going up into the bottom of something that looks like a big pipe with concrete; the pipe goes into an open hole in that bigger device, about 12 inches in radius maybe, and they are squirting some green-looking liquid into it.

I’ve watched occasionally, but they’ve never backed off enough that I could tell exactly what that was they were showing.

They had to design and build the new pieces from scratch, then test them before transporting them to the drillsite. You don't just bop down to Blowout Preventers R Us and grab them off the shelf.
